Cedar Point (not) announces TTD downtime

I'm the opposite of Coasterqueen...I'd rather they hold off until the week after Labor Day when the park is CLOSED during the week to do major repairs. If it were down the first couple weekends in Sept, and then up every Halloweekend afterwards, I'd be happy.

You can see the "smoke" at the end of the launch when the sled goes by. My bet is it's a cloud of nylon.

That's not smoke. They added water cooling to the catch car channel, and you are seeing water mist kicked up by the motion of the catch car and cable.

than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

From Janice Witherow herself:

"Top Thrill Dragster is not scheduled for any maintenance periods during the time you inquired about. However, please know that while the ride is operating more consistently, it still has its periods of "downtime" and we continue to work through some challenges associated with the coaster."

There it is, the official word.

I absolutely LOVE Dragster, but I can't help but feel sorry for it sometimes. I feel like it's saying "I think I can, I think I can...." Yesterday while standing in line during the on and off periods I kept watching the trains saying "Come on baby........LAUNCH!!!!"

Dragster kicks ass. It's orgasm on steel tracks. I lust it, I do not mind the *down times* as I have hope for the coaster. The long wait times are well worth it.

That ****ing launch...........that's all that needs to be said. :-)))))

I don't see many Intamin prototype gems arriving at Cedar Point anytime soon though. :-)

I wonder what could be done with magnetics for the launch sled. Would it be possible to have the launch run lined with magnets (I wouldn't think you'd even need powered ones), then same polarity magnets on the bottom and sides of the sled, so it just floats on a magnetic cushion in the channel? That'd get rid of a whole lot of friction (possibly even taking load off the motor) and definitely generate less heat, I would think.

I'm not an expert by any means, though, just a suggestion from someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

There, I said it.

That is the stupidest site I've ever seen...

Anyways, I don't think they could line the run with magnets because they need something to stop the sled at the end of the launch... as far as I know they still need to use a friction break for that.

This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time.

enfynet, they currently use magnets to stop the sled, along with the cabel drum itself (at least I think so). Useing magnets is and interesting idea that could work, depending if there is room for the sled to move up and still work properly.

How about an alternative title to this topic:

"Jeff announces Cedarpoint_TTD downtime"

So. Is it safe to plan my trip to Cedar Point during the upcoming week with the starting day of Monday, August, 18th? I had plans, and I thought this rumor was true so I was not going to go. Now I find out this is not true. What's the verdict? Of course it may have down time, but If I knew it where going to be closed I would not go. IM traveling 9hrs for it. If its not up I wont be mad, but disappointed. I will be there two days, so maybe I will get a shot at it.
swimmerkev, no one is forcing you to read it.

Whenever you can ride a roller coaster and experience 15 spots of intense airtime, you know you're on a good coaster. (see: Phoenix)

Well I'm glad I got to ride it on the 11th. I got two rides on the thing, both were in the front seat. (both took 1.5hrs each to get on the ride) I'm glad I rode it twice on Monday, because when they finally got it up on Tuesday (the second day I was there) the line was over 5hrs long. It stretched out of the plaza area all the way to Coasters Cafe. On the pluse side of that long line, the line for Millie was only 1hr15min, which we got two rides in. WT's line was only 45min long on Tuesday.

As for TTD, I will say that it's a fun ride, but not the best ride in the park. I still enjoy Millie the most followed closely by the back seat of WT and the back seat of Maggie.

I have to admit, I'm puzzled why they couldnt wait until after August when they are only open on weekends when they would be much less disruption for guests, Still maybe the repairs need to be done straight away???? Either way the best thing to do is keep checking Cedar Point's webpage for its operational status

Also maybe the part about the last car coming out is true????Has anyone noticed that when they put them in, Rollbacks on the coaster have doubled???Prehaps it is simply too much extra weight for the coaster to cope than they realised and so there is no option than to take them out???Just my theory anyway

PaulD, did you not read the thread? It isn't happening.

Check the webcams, TTD is very open!
What's the deal with the nylon I keep hearing about? I'm not up to date with everything, sorry.

The thing that slides down the track, pulling the train along, moves through a track lined with nylon. The nylon apparently overheats and wears out from the friction.

Sorry, I just replied without realising??? Glad to hear its not closing and its good to hear its operating more reliable now anyway. I'm off to CP in October and I really want it to be open for my visit cause I'm coming from England and wont be happy if its closed

I was there just last Sunday and TTD was running great!! I saw ONE rollback the entire day! and I got 2 rides in and I was with a friend who was there the first timne so I got on all the other rides once also! the line was moving good also it was no standing still at all...that launch is amazing believe me! I personally dont think that this is true....the launch looked fine all day no problems at all IMO but i am not a scientist but from my view it was moving great!!
