Cedar Point announces Shoot The Rapids for 2010

[Ed. note: The following is an unedited press release. -J]

Grab your paddles and climb aboard the newest river-ride adventure this side of the Appalachians! Shoot the Rapids, an all-new family water ride, will rise above Cedar Point’s rustic Frontier Trail when it makes a splash on Opening Day 2010.

During the 2,100-foot-long journey, adventurers will travel through a wooded area and around an illegal still used for brewing sweet-tasting elixir, all while encountering surprise water elements and special effects. Guests will navigate the waters aboard a 10-passenger boat. Riders will be seated in five rows of two and will be secured by individual over-the-head lap bars.

The excitement builds when the boats ascend one of two lift hills. The first and largest hill will be 85 feet tall and will drop riders down onto Millennium Island at a 45-degree angle. The second hill will be 49 feet tall and will end with a dramatic “shoot” through water rapids and rockwork.

Guests on the Frontier Trail can keep their feet planted on dry land and watch as riders complete their wet and wild trek down the final drop.

“Shoot the Rapids will instantly become a family favorite,” said John Hildebrandt, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “Our guests wanted another option to cool off on warm summer days. We listened, and Shoot the Rapids will deliver the perfect combination of refreshment, thrills and new memories at Cedar Point.”

Shoot the Rapids will cost more than $10.5 million to build and will be the most expensive water ride ever built at Cedar Point. It will have a capacity of approximately 1,200 riders per hour. The ride will last three minutes. A rider height requirement has not yet been determined and will be released at a later date. The ride was designed and manufactured by IntaRide LLC of Glen Burnie, Md., the same company that built the Maverick, Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force roller coasters and the Thunder Canyon river-rafting ride.

I was just thinking again about the comments how the attraction was being marketed and to whom. If the marketing wasn't just for the negligible percentage of enthusiasts, but for the general public, are we to believe that GP mom and dad would understand things like "not taking out the Beemer" or "Gee-see-eye" (or however it was spelled)?

They wanted a good laugh at our expense.

That's probably it. I'm sure there's somebody from the parks noseing around a bit wondering what these knucklehead coaster junkies are so worked up about.

Darn it a word "definatly" got by my firefox spell checker. I would punish it but I dont want it to leave me, as I am the worlds worst speller with out it ;).

My brain doesn't like to spell that word right either, Touchdown. Strange that it tells me when I spell it wrong thoug...wait...

definitely

Yep. It works for me. Maybe you accidentally told it to ignore the word once. I wonder how you tell it to not ignore it anymore?

So, about this new ride. I've been thinking about the clues, and I'm going to jump on the "they mislead enthusiasts" wagon. I had a very good idea of what it was before the announcement, so the clues just threw me off, and made me think that maybe my info was wrong. I still don't understand whet gee-see-eye has to do with a flume, as well as a lot of other clues for that matter. Who does CP have to hide the new ride's info from? They don't have any competitors anymore. They should have given us some real clues instead of trying to totally mislead us, and the so-called GP. It was done in a pretty dirty way, and was not at all an enjoyable experience.

Let's see how seriously people take clues or hints the next time they try to get some hype going before a new ride is announced. That was ridiculous.

CP could learn a thing or two from HW, when it comes to making up clues for new rides.

^I think the problem is when you defiantly add definatly to your dictionary. ("Ignore" only works for an instance or a document, but your dictionary is more of a permanent addition - mine has *perinatal* added). ;)

Oh, and I think this new ride will be a great addition - higher capacity than a traditional flume (badly needed at CP), and a better ride experience. This could work out so well, they might end up getting an AquaTrax in '11... :)

I am also a little disappointed that it isn't a traditional flume, but like you mentioned, Gator, CP needs the better capacity, and I am really glad they decided to put in a flume of some kind.

I mean, really, really glad. :)

I think the people around here who are complaining that it was overhyped should've just read Moosh's hints like I did. It met my expectations exactly. As for the "hints," the only thing I got from them was the feeding frenzy so many people had trying to figure out what the ride was based on them. Maybe I'm the minority, but frankly, I don't really pay much attention to a new addition until it's announced.

Well, unless it's a B&M. Then I care a little more. ;)

Should I wonder how close they came to my idea of the Peanuts "Summer Camp canoe race" in terms of ride experience (if not theming).... ;)

I'll defiantly see some of ya'll at BooBuzz... :)

If it was a racing flume, then you might have something.

Something themed to a "Peanuts Summer Camp canoe race would have ruled."

Gee, See Eye = Gee, see I as in Intamin.
2 days later people were enjoying the intamin setting of the park.
Gee, I wonder what company is providing the new ride?
Gee, I wonder how many people lost the guessing game, feel embarrassed, are bitching about the announcement and will still go to the Point next year anyway.

251,00 Facebook fans, only 500 or so responses, many of which are positive. We all know that gripers are more vocal than happy folk; sounds like a successful campaign to me.

Someone else "complained" ;) about the lack of NASCAR themeing.
Moonshiners are the origin of NASCAR so it still ties in with the two Intimidators.

AT--who complained about the "triple" looping Mindbender in 1978; but still has it in his top 10 thirty years later.

I wonder how mant times "Dueling Banjos" will be played per day.

Do you know over at PointBuzz ( I know...) there's someone who is insisting that Cedar Point will surprise everyone next year with a fantastic new coaster anyway? Just sure of it. Like, CP's best gimmick ever. A big fat secret surprise. Sheesh.

I don't care or listen to what most of 'em say, but my point is some still just won't let it go!

sorry.

Awwkwaard...

Why be shy to say what you meant? Jeff criticizes the audience of both Coasterbuzz and PointBuzz all the time.

I know exactly what he meant. I haven't visited pointbuzz at all more than a handful of times over the past year, and I've completely given up on the discussion forums, because the quality of the discussion just isn't there for me.

It's a niche of a niche and it isn't for everyone. There's noise, especially leading up to an announcement, but I think we do a pretty good job overall. We have a core group of contributors who, believe or not, manage to foster good conversation. There are strange and overzealous fans in all online communities.

My pet peeve is when someone overgeneralizes the site, lumping everyone together as one, as if they collectively share the same opinion and have the same posting style.
