Cedar Point announces Shoot The Rapids for 2010

[Ed. note: The following is an unedited press release. -J]

Grab your paddles and climb aboard the newest river-ride adventure this side of the Appalachians! Shoot the Rapids, an all-new family water ride, will rise above Cedar Point’s rustic Frontier Trail when it makes a splash on Opening Day 2010.

During the 2,100-foot-long journey, adventurers will travel through a wooded area and around an illegal still used for brewing sweet-tasting elixir, all while encountering surprise water elements and special effects. Guests will navigate the waters aboard a 10-passenger boat. Riders will be seated in five rows of two and will be secured by individual over-the-head lap bars.

The excitement builds when the boats ascend one of two lift hills. The first and largest hill will be 85 feet tall and will drop riders down onto Millennium Island at a 45-degree angle. The second hill will be 49 feet tall and will end with a dramatic “shoot” through water rapids and rockwork.

Guests on the Frontier Trail can keep their feet planted on dry land and watch as riders complete their wet and wild trek down the final drop.

“Shoot the Rapids will instantly become a family favorite,” said John Hildebrandt, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “Our guests wanted another option to cool off on warm summer days. We listened, and Shoot the Rapids will deliver the perfect combination of refreshment, thrills and new memories at Cedar Point.”

Shoot the Rapids will cost more than $10.5 million to build and will be the most expensive water ride ever built at Cedar Point. It will have a capacity of approximately 1,200 riders per hour. The ride will last three minutes. A rider height requirement has not yet been determined and will be released at a later date. The ride was designed and manufactured by IntaRide LLC of Glen Burnie, Md., the same company that built the Maverick, Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force roller coasters and the Thunder Canyon river-rafting ride.

I mean the expectations for the announcement itself. I know people wanted a log flume and I don't have a problem with that.

Those two statements do not add up, BD, at least not in any way that you can "blame" someone else for.

An announcement is just an announcement. The ride itself met your expectations and others. What's the problem again?

You're miffed because you felt "fooled"? Look at the root word there. Just saying. :)

Its Cedar Point, everyone expects every new attraction to be a coaster, and when it isnt people get pissed no matter what the park does. Im thrilled the park is getting a flume. I also really hope a dark ride goes in next before another coaster.

I am also thrilled with this new ride. I am also thrilled nothing is getting ripped out for it. Ah yes, A dark ride would be very nice as I love them! A new coaster would be awesome though!

So, would we call this announcipointment, the "anticipointment" of an announcement not living up to the hype? ;)

Certain victory.

What ever happened to exceeding expectations? I thought it was going to be log flume and actually wanted it to be one, I was just expecting it to be something more after the build up.

These are the same people who dropped hints for what eventually ended up being the parade staging area. I should have known better.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what "over hype" is. If you're a marketer, I'm not sure there is such a thing.

You remember when Apple announced iPod socks and the HiFi?

You're confusing the intent. How good a product is in the end is a separate issue from how well it was marketed. Again, if you can market rubber dog crap and achieve huge awareness, then you've succeeded in your marketing (or hype, if you will). Delivering on the quality and desire for the product does not rest solely on the marketing. You don't dial back because you're uncertain of the quality or scope or importance or whatever of the product, you do just the opposite.

The Segway is a good example of over-hype.

Only for people who haven't been on one.

Let me give you a little piece of advice directly from Joan Rivers:

"When they stop making fun of you is when you are dead."

I am afraid y'all take this way too seriously.....and Tony I am flattered, a nice gift will be in the mail shortly : )

Are you trying to say the Segway wasn't over-hyped? It's generally recognized that it was by most people. They promised huge things. I don't see many people on them and transportation wasn't revolutionized.

Really? You ever ridden one?

They're way more awesome than any "hype" I've ever heard.

I would not open that, if I was Tony. Creepy much? ;)

I think it's funny how some people keep saying the same thing over and over again.

I've done that more than a few times, but I realized that almost everyone knew where I stood on whatever issue it was (cough)Q-bot(cough), and I quit. It's okay to mention it once per topic, imo. ;)

Oh my GOD! I just realized that there were exactly T H R E E people in the video Gonch link us to.

Speaking of the video, They made a great point about the height of the new flume being larger than Snake River Falls. Saying that a ride with an 85 foot drop isn't big news is just silly.

Segways are amazing devices. They actually HAVE revolutionized transport in a way. Police officers and Security Guards and major urban areas that use them are able to protect larger areas because they have greater mobility and are now taller than the general public.

I'm taller than the general public and I can walk really really fast! I am revolutionary. :)

It'll probably be pancakes... ;)

I wonder what the over/under was on number of posts about a flume at Cedar Point?

LostKause's avatar

I just want to add one more thing. Some people were accusing others of whining about the park needing a flume, now some people are accusing people of whining that the park announced a flume instead of a coaster. Now that's funny!

I never thought of it that way, LK! That is hilarious!

I'm more amused how enthusiast is such a naughty word on a coaster site.
Please, you people who don't want to be called enthusiasts or associate with enthusiasts would skip your own mother's funeral if there were ERT within two time zones. ;)
