Cedar Fair considers purchasing Paramount's Kings Island

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Toledo Blade reports, practically as a footnote, that CEO Dick Kinzel mentioned after the annual unit-holders meeting that Cedar Fair is considering the purchase of Paramount's Kings Island. The bulk of the story details how unit-holders complained about not being able to purchase 2-for-1 tickets.

Face-Off and Drop Zone are movies?

Yea, but the movies that the two rides(face off, drop zone)are named after are o-k. The may be worth a rental if you find them on the bargan shelf at the video store.
I think it is odd that Cedar Faor is only trying to buy Kings island. That would make three parks in ohio by the same company that all are thrill parks. They are competeing agains't themselves....now they need to buy Carowinds...that would be a totally different story. LOL I am from NC in case you didn't catch on.

Look at six flags in Texas. They HAD 3 parks in one state.

Let me ask you something...how big is the state of Ohio compared to Texas? Ya, that's what I thought.

Is that supposed to be a smart a$$ed remark?

Let me ask you something, do you think it matters?

PKI and Cedar Point "compete" for some portion of the Columbus market, and that's basically it. The bulk of CP's market is Cleveland and Detroit, while PKI draws from Cincy, Dayton and presumably Louisville.

"Face-Off and Drop Zone are movies?"

Exactly my point. They make great names for rides though. I don't see why they can't keep them. Just remove the movie references. Face/Off is the name for the starting point in a hockey match. You could argue that.;)

Let me see if I have this straight.

If CF buys PKI, they end up competing with themselves. No matter which park someone attends, CF takes in the money.

If someone else buys PKI, CF only makes money if someone goes to CP or GL and loses the revenue if that person goes to _KI.

Gee, if only I'd paid more attention in Econ 101, I'd be able to figure this one out.

As for brand licensing, Italian Job could always be rechristened Disaster Transport South. :)

ECON 101 would mean one SP for all three major ohio parks is one hell of a bargain
The only place I could see them losing money on is the season passes.

PKI is my home park, and we would always buy tickets and go to CP every year. But if they are linked with passes we won't have to do that.

Come on CF buy PKI!

I would like to see them buy SFGAm also while they are at it....but I doubt Six Flags is looking to divest themselves of that park.
Fascinating . . especially considering that KECO nearly purchased CP once upon a time.
This is pretty interesting... though personally, I would imagine they would give the park a good look over, whether CF is really interested or not. I mean, from CF's point of view, it's not everyday you get to appraise the competition like when a park is for sale. No matter who it goes to (CF including), or what audience it's targeting, it will have to compete against Cedar Point (see also: Geauga Lake; or Kennywood and Idlewild). It's not in the company's best interest to buy PKI and then loose money on it, so I'm sure they'll make the right decision.
Yes that season pass thing would be a great deal for people who go to parks a lot. Which isn't all the GP, but definately some of them.

Regardless, I am not convinced CF would do the best job with PKI. The change in atmosphere would not be for the better in PKI's case. If CF does it the way they've done with all their other parks, the atmosphere and charm that PKI has always had will greatly suffer.

I'd also rather keep with the old family ways of Paramount than have CF come in and start putting in Silver Bullets, Hydras, and Patriots so that the park can be up to their standards. Even if it does mean the park's first B&M. At least the old ways are different from CP and obviously brought in more money.

I'm thinking Cedar Fair might be a good thing for some of the Paramount Parks that are farther away though. But PKI is just too close to be a good thing IMO. I'm just thinking that when CF's three OH parks compete, The Point is always going to get the better new attractions. Which stinks for us park-goers that don't go to CP all the time. Thats my take on it anyway.

Does this mean the Beast will get even more trims?

No thanks, we'd like to keep our trees and wooden coaster maintenance. At least that's one thing Cedar Fair can't make any worse at PKI.

They'd probably just take care of the season pass money loss by making season passes for other parks in state a more expensive addon like they do for Geauga Lake now.

I'd rather compete with myself than someone else...

Hence, CF buying Geauga, Kennywood buying Idlewild... did those companies really want those properties, or did they just not want someone else to have them???

I think this is be a good move by Cedar Fair, but I hope that they don't lose their focus. It seems like over the past few years they have had more focus on buying parks than maintaining the ones that they already have. If they buy PKI, and possibly the whole chain, that will make alot of purchuses over the past few years. Meanwhile I have not seen Michigan's Adventure, or Worlds of Fun build any major rides in the same time span.
