Cedar Fair answers questions about Geauga Lake acquisition

Cedar Fair today announced the acquisition of Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, with the intention of opening it in May as Geauga Lake. A conference call today revealed some additional points beyond the issued press release.

In opening comments, Cedar Fair CEO Dick Kinzel said that the company intends to operate Geauga Lake as a “traditional family park, not a theme park,” and added that the decision not to sustain the animal park came out of their belief that operating animal attractions is not in their expertise. He said there was a lot of history in the name and that it was the obvious choice.

The current vice president of operations at Cedar Point, Bill Spehn, will be Geauga Lake’s new general manager. The full-time staff will be “evaluated” and the seasonals this year will still draw from the local pool of teenagers and college students.

Marketing VP John Hidebrandt at Cedar Point explained that the park would have a more regional focus. Their long-term plan is to create synergies that encourage guests to visit both parks in terms of pricing and ticketing.

Current customers that have purchased season passes at Six Flags Worlds of Adventure may choose either a refund or to redeem those passes at Geauga Lake passes. Cedar Fair season passes from other parks, including Cedar Point, will not be valid at Geauga Lake. Specifics about combination deals between the two parks have not yet been determined.

The trademarks under license by Six Flags will not be used at the rebranded park, so many rides and attractions will be renamed. A decision on whether or not to use the licensed Peanuts characters at Geauga Lake has not been made.

CFO Bruce Jackson said on the call that this deal will not have any impact on quarterly distribution to Cedar Fair unit holders.

Cedar Fair expects to open the park on May 1. Kinzel said after a tour of the park today that they expect all rides to open with the park if they pass detailed inspection, the only question mark being the Enterprise ride.

I think that CF Did a great job buying worlds of adventure because look cp is only 360 acres and sfwoa is 760 acres this would be the perfect park to to be the roller coaster capital of the world its a great size
As far as the "family park" phrase, that would suggest (l) several different live shows running several times a day, (2) extensive picnic shelters, (3) a full scale PKI level Kiddieland, (4) lots of Busch Garden type shops and eateries, (5) trees, flower gardens and extensive landscaping (6) a waterpark to rival the new PKI installation, and (7) an array of traditional rides to touch the nostalgia in parents and grandparents : a Turtle, Tilt a Whirl, Scrambler, state of the art Carousel, Rockets, Flying Scooters/Eagles, CP, PKI or Busch Garden level Train, state of the art dark ride, and a few grandparent friendly roller coasters in the mode of Gemini, Racers and Reptar.

Given a year or two to build all this up, it will be interesting to watch the competition with Kennywood, Waldameer and Conneaut.

Although I am surprised, I am thrilled that Cedar Fair will be running Geauga Lake from now on. When I heard that Six Flags bought Geauga back in 1998, I was expecting the worst. And, as we all know, that's what we got.

As someone who grew up in Northeast Ohio, I visited Geauga Lake yearly from the late 70's, remembering their "Double Loop and Corkscrew Too" campaign! Although it could never compete with CP, it was a nice family park and the affordable way to spend a day.

Six Flags seemed to think that all you need for a successful park are more rides. However, they forgot that you cannot take advantage of your customers, providing bad customer service, inoperable coasters, and sub-par food and expect to make a profit.

I look forward to the turning around of Geauga Lake and the return of another great American amusement park. Congrats Cedar Fair!!

Does anyone know the new names of the rides at Geauga Lake? If You Do please e-mail me the names. At Suzyovalpants@aol.com

THanks!

I am somewhat indifferent to the acquisition. I live about 30 minutes from Six Flags, and go to school no more than 20 minutes from the park, yet I still prefer going to Cedar Point. The traffic in Aurora/Bainbridge is absolutely AWFUL in the dead of winter, when the park isn't open because of the new shopping centers across the street. I can't imagine how God-awful the traffic will be during the park season. I bet it will be backed up into the next city and on the freeway. I am glad to see the Sea World side go. I was never a fan because I always felt bad for the animals, but that is just me. I personally cannot wait for Cedar Point to open this season.
I have never been to any of these parks. I am fine with the move. Hasn't Cedar Fair/Point already done great things for us? Hasn't Cedar Fair produced great parks for the world? Cedar Point is the best amusement park in the world and taking over Geauga Lake could make the Geauga Lake park even better! The Geauga Lake rides are great and either some rides will go to Cedar Point (hopefully) or possibly more thrill rides and family rides (family rides for sure) could be added. I think this is a big leap for the rollercoaster world.
Wyandot Lake is still owned by Six Flags, to my knowledge. This buying of WoA made it real easy to decided where my season pass will be too. PKI an Hour and a half south of here. Last year we did the Wyandot Lake/Six Flags deal and it was great. we had loads of fun. Now, it's not worth the trek north. I hope CF buys Wyandot as I think they need bought again. Then the meal deal could return as since Six Flags bought Wyandot there really has not been a new ride since. The last new ride I remember was the jet stream water slides in 1994.
