Canada’s Wonderland announces Alpenfury

Posted | Contributed by RCMAC

From the official site:

When fire and ice meet inside the mysterious Wonder Mountain, the force will propel you into a thrilling journey beginning with a launch that blasts your train vertical through the mountain summit, 50 metres into the sky. You’ll race across tracks that span the park, reaching speeds of 115 km/h, flipping and twisting through nine breathtaking inversions. This is AlpenFury, Canada’s longest, tallest and fastest launch coaster. Are you brave enough to face nature’s wrath?

I am a bit concerned around the capacity. CW pulls in great attendance and 2 trains 18 seat is not going to be a crowd mover.

I wonder if the two trains on this and Rapterra are Cedar Fair conceding the fact that guests are always carrying stuff and three train operations just aren't possible anymore without Steel Vengeance-style lockers or Yukon Striker-style conveyor belt bins. Which I guess means three train ops are possible, the parks just have to be willing to put up the cash...

Well, with launch coasters you have to keep in mind that you don't have a lift, so

  • the ride time is significantly shorter
  • you lose a block section

As Jeff mentioned, the ride time is about a minute, which doesn't leave a lot of time to unload and load *two* trains.

Such a great addition to an already awesome park! Yes I hope the capacity won't be a problem.

Looks fun but an eyesore. Too bad they didn't go with S&S, those trains are particularly comfy and free - no major crotch action or claustrophobia, a good thing; they are the perfect modern steel coaster train. Premier, not as much but still better than many!

Looks like a long ride, as others mentioned I would have thought they would go for the super-high capacity ride they need, but still looks great.

With the problems Steel Curtain has I think it's a good thing they didn't go with S&S.

Steel Curtain

Im curious to see if new SF stays pissed at Intamin, and slightly less so at RMC, obv they like B&M and Zamperla, I just hope they add in Vekoma and Mack, but who knows how long it’s been since Zimmerman was in Europe.

It’s a little premature to say that Zamperla will remain in their good graces. Also, Zimmerman isn’t an idiot — he knows that Mack and Vekoma exist. He just added a Vekoma coaster to Kings Island. It’s just a matter of cost.

The "new Six Flags" is lead by the "old Cedar Fair." Why would anything like that change?

That was my point, its CF making the choices for SF now, they have a-lot more parks to buy stuff for, and hopefully maintain CF levels of getting stuff on time.

And umm TT2? also Vekoma really stepping it up lately, also looks like alot more cool work for Disney obv.

Im just trying to process how for your busiest park you go with a two train launch coaster, from a manufacturer with trains that are notoriously terrible at capacity, and punish your guest as well.

He just added a Vekoma coaster to Kings Island

Right and for 25 they didn’t pick it to clone at Carowinds, they went with the cheaper option.

There are factors in deciding who to work with that are not immediately obvious to enthusiasts:

  • Contractually restricted areas where another ride cannot be installed by the same manufacturer for a period of time
  • The number of already committed projects by the manufacturer (sorry, we’re too busy!)
  • Industry reputation & experience of spare part availability (I have to order that widget how far in advance?!)
  • Multi-year deals that are financially advantageous and hedge against inflation
  • Anticipated logistical challenges with port cities and ground transportation (the complexity depends on what coast the park is closer too)
  • Currency exchange, tariffs, etc.

Perhaps their were other manufacturers considered for this project that we’ll never know about.

Source is reddit so take with grain of salt. But recently read that Paramount era build of Top Gun now Flight Deck at CW was initially supposed to be a B&M invert similar to the CGA one. Cedar Point had a contractual restriction of no other B&M inverts built within a certain mile radius were allowed for x years. Because of this it's now an incredibly painful Vekoma hang and bang.

Ah yes, the B & M contracts.
