Brakes on Mantis??!?

Going down the first drop on Mantis I noticed that they put brakes in the middle of the drop which weren't there last year.. Why did the put brakes there???

They have been there for a while now, you may have just not noticed them. I went earlier this year and I couldn't tell they were there, but last year they were very noticable. It depends on how high they have them turned up!

When I was there it was hittin' hard. I kind of looked at my girlfriend and we both said, "what the hell was that"!. I still enjoyed the ride though. She hated it.

The brakes give you more hangtime on the loop

I noticed this too, and almost didn't think there were on it when I rode it in 1999, but I found this picture I took: http://www.angelfire.com/mt/cedar2/images/tripmantisloop2.jpg
And you will see from the back of the track that they are there.

Yeah, it wasn't the brake she hated, she just hates stand ups. And Mantis was her least favorite. Too much work for her, she's lazy ;)

"To reduce the G-Force exerted on our guests." In other words, some cry babies thought it was too intense and ruined it for the rest of us.

Now it's just a rough (like all the others, GA Scorcher excluded) and poorly paced ride, like
most standups...
I know sometimes those breaks are for slowing the coaster down, but I also heard that it is there in case of a roll back. Is it there for both purposes or just to slow down the train?

RobCoasting, I take it that you never rode Mantis during it first season before they added the brakes(if you didn't you have no room to talk). And Rob we know you hate Cedar Point and you won't return...

I don't see why "they" put a brake on the drop. The cry babies (GP) can't handle a little G-Force. There was no point putting a brake on the drop.

I rode it in 1998 during my first first, no brakes, and it was pretty intense, still a bit vibrational, but I could deal with that, it was intense.

So there!

I'm glad you are aware of the aforementioned fact;

Boy Gemini, Mantis looks great in that picture! I only hope it doesn't fade again so fast after it's painted next year.

It's hard for Rob to enjoy coasters, they are always too "painful".

I rode Mantis during it's first season and on opening day 97' (also pre-trim, it was added mid-season) and can say that the ride is half of what it used to be now...the entire charm of Mantis was the tighter layout than its siblings (Chang & Riddler) which is rather ruined by going through them more slowly. In it's opening season I considered Mantis the best ride in the park, ditto on my return trip in 97. Now I just consider it good but not anywhere near best at the Point. The severe effect of jello legs during the early years was excellent and the ride was sheer insanity without a chance to catch your breath, the trim took that away pretty throughly IMO.

The brakes were added pre-season 1997. In fact, here's a report about Mantis from a May 11, 1997 post on rec.roller-coaster:

Ask yourself this-

If you didnt know they were there, and couldnt see or hear them, would you really notice them??

HARDLY.

It is all sub-concious.

The trims do not take away everything Mantis stands for, sorry. The trims are barely there, and it still gives a great ride. It does not "ruin" the whole experience, its all in your head, just like Mongoose said.

I still love mantis with all my heart. I think night rides on Mantis are pretty underrated, as is the ride as a whole. I mean, that finale still is nuts. I would prefer the trims not be there just because they are noisy as hell, but other than that, i don't think they detract too much from the ride.

Rob if you read the posts above your you would have know the brakes were added before the 1997 season. So when you rode it there were brakes. And no I don't want a cookie.

I like the brakes... they give some great hang time in the vertical loop.

I like the hangtime effect that they cause on the loop and on the diving loop. It is like doing a head stand 100 feet above the ground!
