Brakes on first drop of Beast

I was at PKI last Wednesday (8-7) and also Monday (8-12) I rode The Beast both days and there was one thing I did notice that was a HUGE difference. In those 5 days brakes were added to the first drop of The Beast. They are located near the top of the drop. and were on rather high. I don't know why PKI chose to add brakes and with less then 2 weeks of everyday opperation. If anyone knows why PKI did add brakes please post.

I am seriously doubting this information and I mean seriously. Where were they put on the drop? What kind are they?

They were the same type as the rest of the ride (not including station brakes) They were near the top of the drop. It has been added in the past 5 days,

Your not a newbie, but I don't think it's true, they would have to test it with the breaks and such. I seriously doubt it though. Shaggy, Sean, anyone know for sure?

It would have been down for at least a couple days if they decided to add new trims. Installation alone seems like it would take a couple days, and then you would have to change the spacing of the other brakes as well so they wouldn't grab so hard. That would take another couple days. Finally they would run trains with the water dummies to test thing out for another day. The timeline just doesn't work out and it doesn't make sense either.

Sounds like you just got a bad ride. I seriously doubt there are new brakes on Beast. Besides, if the coaster is being advertised as running faster than ever, why would they put more brakes on it? Faster means more customers. They'd need at least a couple days to install them and test it, and I'm sure if there were new brakes on the top of the first drop on Beast, we'd hear about it in other threads and stuff. We'd also hear about it being closed for installation and testing of those new brakes. Since this is the first time I have heard this, I am going to assume you are joking or got a bad ride on Beast. Until this can be proven, I'm skeptical.

I can further report that there were no first drop brakes on the Beast on Sunday, August 11.

I just love to look at that wonderful brakeless first drop as we are cresting lift 2 and as we pull into the brake run!

Actually, this is the bad thing about magnetic trims...

Adding an additional unit somewhere on the ride would not require readjustment of subsequent units because the braking force is proportional to the speed of the train. So if the train is moving more slowly when it hits the second hill, it will simply reach its target speed more rapidly.

Hopefully I'll be able to check out this rumor later this week.

That does make sense now that you say it Dave.

I was under the impression of just the oppisite with Magnetic brakes.

All I can say is that I rode it early afternoon Friday, August 9, and it was screaming through the course. I also didn't notice any brakes on the first drop. If the way it is running now is because of the magnetic brakes, then I LOVE magnetic brakes.

Could it be that the slowness at the top of the first hill is just from the chain slowing down like it has always done? I was there for morning Goldpass ERT on the 10th and The Beast didn`t open till after ten but when I rode it, it was runnning just like it has been the rest of the season.

Brakes were added on August 12th

The Beast has added a brake on the first drop. I was there on Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 13th and 14th) and rode in the front seat both days. The brake is long and silver like the other ones placed throughout the ride. I'm assuming it's a magnetic brake. If you people don't believe this go and ride it for yourself in the front.

It's not a big deal though because I didn't even notice the brake until I saw it when I sat in the front.

I rode on August 13th and there are brakes at the top of the first hill. It is very dissapointing.
They are ruining the BEAST as we know it. Sad, Sad thing.

I'm glad I rode it pre-lift brake.

Hey man. Wanna buy some weed? Crack? Freepass on Millennium Force? I got the hook up...

Does anyone know why PKI choose to add the brakes and why this late in the season?

I`ll have to check that out next time I go. I haven`t been to PKI since the 10th because I`ve been working so much at Coney.

Until I see a picture I'm going to have a hard time believing this.

All I need is 4.5 million bucks and a half a mile long sliver of land and maybe someone could build me my very own Shivering Timbers. ;)
