Block member from sending Private Messages?

Idea? Possibility?

If someone is harassing you let me know and I'll boot them.

ACtually, got an email, was expecting a PM. But it seems the problem disappeared. Hmmm...Funny how that happens sometimes:).
Ignoring it would also work.

Down is the new up.
Hard to just ignore a personal message addressed to me...

Jeff,

Is a blocking members feature something that can be looked into down the road? I am sure Clint and I are not the only ones with this concern. :-)

Better yet, maybe have an option where you can just disable the PM thing yourself in your account settings? It would be a nice feature to have.

If someone is bugging you that bad, rat them out to Jeff. Both of you clearly contribute enough to the site so that Jeff would take your word for it that someone is badgering you. OR If you don't want to read the PM's just delete them without reading. I just don't see this being a big enough problem to require the time and effort for a solution. Thats just my 3 and a half cents.

I have several unread/deleted ones from mine, but I can always tell exactly who it is right away, even if he has used countless screen names.

I have always alerted Jeff right away with my issue. That's not a problem and he's always been very quick to take care of it.

I was just curious if it could ever be an option down the road for members, even if it's for paid members. :-)

An ignore list is something on the feature list, but it's a fairly ambitious feature list, and eventually I'll have to prioritize it. It's a total rewrite from the ground up, and I can't even explain how involved that is. It wasn't possible to keep band-aid-ing the old code. Not only that, but it's based on the next version of .NET (Microsoft's programming platform), which won't even be released until some time next year. (That made writing a book about it a real pain!)

The point is that there are all kinds of things I'd like to include, but being one guy managing tens of thousands of lines code is quite an undertaking.

Thats cool. I just decided to hide my profile, and sending me emails is not a big deal (Thats when you forward them to the senders ISP).

I'm not begging for the option right now, but in the future, if available, it would be nice:).

And its not about the fact that I can just skip over a Private Message I don't want to read. Just to recieve it is harrassment, and thanfully I A) know Jeff is known for taking care of such things, B) certain people disappear before they have the chance to utilize the function:).

Who's botherin' you Clint? Want me to do a drive by? I know somebody who know somebody who snuffed somebody. :) :)

Fate is the path of least resistance.

Jeff, from a programmer's standpoint, would it be as easy, harder, or just about the same to block PMs coming from a certain IP address as opposed to from a certain SN, if that's even possible at all? I haven't had this problem, but I just thought that a person with a number of SNs could get around this problem pretty easily.

With DHCP used by most ISPs it is easy to change your IP address or have it change for non usageso blocking an ip would only work as long as the individual didn't change his IP or have it changed by the ISPs DHCP Server. ooooooooooooops maybe i said too much.

IP blocking is not effective. Even on a cable or DSL connection your address changes at some point.

The more complex an application becomes, the more likely you'll break something when you add to it. In the case of the forum, which is also the underlying engine for a lot of other stuff on this site, I'm not willing to risk breaking anything. I'm also trying to devote energy to the rewrite, and for that reason doing band-aid work is kind of counter-productive.

Heck, I'm on a cable line and I change my IP every so often - just because I'm weird like that. :)

I don't like being tied to one traceable number for too long. (and I'm not even a wacko privacy paranoid type)

I doubt anyone at your ISP cares about your porn addiction. ;)

I still know how to find you!

PS - sorry about all those private messages ;)

LoL, yes, but, then, you were the first to find out my last name on here, Matthew.

Send as many PMs to me as you want. They're always...entertaining?

Actually, instead of just blocking a sender, I may actually rather have it so that if my profile is hidden, noone could send me a message or email. I'd hate to have to lose the possibility of getting PMs from the cool peeps on this site, and as of right now, tis not a problem. Perhaps an option in a later updated to turn off the ability to recieve PMs and Email from anyone period(well, with the exception of you, Jeff).
