We will be passing through VA next week and want to hit one of the parks. Any suggestions? We really just want to ride the coasters, so the 'scenery' and stuff like the number of flat rides are not that important to us (I know it adds to the park but, we really just want to ride the most awesome coasters!)

Well, BGW has better scenery. IMO they have better coasters, You don't want to miss Alpengeist or Apollo's Chariot, I can't really say much for PKD, because I've only been to BGW, and I loved it. The overall atmosphere at BGW is friendly, and they've got great coasters.

Even though BGW has less coaster I think they are all of much higher quality then the ones at PKD. Add in the great atmosphere and food and to me it is a no-brainer.

BGW is often rated as the most beautiful park in the country and has the best shows of any park in the region if you have a non-riding companion or just want to cool off in the heat of the afternoon. The coaster selection is 4 major coasters, plus a mouse. The quality of each of the major coasters is good for its type. Food is generally good. It's a great place to just relax and chill out.

PKD is a flatter, less scenic park with less emphasis on shows. It is also generally much more crowded with longer wait times and the food is not as good. What it does offer is 11 coasters, some of them unique.

It has Hypersonic, though it often isn't working. Volcano is a blast in more ways than one. Ride the front row. It's worth the wait. Grizzly is a very moody woodie. It can be great one day with ejector air and stink another day struggling around. Hurler is an OK woodie. Rebel Yell likewise is a decent but no great woodie. Don't pass up Scoobie Doo. It may be the best junior woodie in the world. Anaconda is an OK looper. Avalanche is a bobsled that is an entertaining, but not great ride. Flight of Fear is terrific now that the the OTSRs have been removed, though it still has too much mid-course brake. FOF also has great themeing. Anaconda is a better than average Arrow looper. Shockwave is a relatively uninteresting standup.

In short, Busch Gardens is probably a nicer place to be, but Kings Dominion has a larger variety of coasters to sample.

Even though PKD has more coasters, I would still pick BGW. I loved every coaster there (well, wild maus was just 'good').

Considering PKD has three excellent steel coasters - Hypersonic XLC; Volcano: The Blast Coaster, and the new Flight of Fear, I would definitely say PKD. Sure BGW has Alpengeist, one of B&M's best inverts, but Volcano is far more a unique experience, and IMO Nitro and Raging Bull are both better than Apollo's Chariot.

PKD also has four woodies, of which The Grizzly is the best, BGW has none.

You said you just want to ride coasters so PKD is the only choice. I've been to both and neither are my homepark so this is an unbiased opinion, and if you're not into shops and theming, PKD is stacks better.

Coasters are my reason for going. We were planning on BGW but then I started thinking that maybe PKD wouldn't be such a bad idea instead!
I really wish we could do both!

I mean I love BGW and PKD the same, but PKD has the better deal. They have more coasters, and a free waterpark. Damn this is a hard decision. AC and Alpie you wont want to miss either....Go to both!:)

BGW all the way! All of their coasters rock (except Wilde Maus, oh well) and they all have awesome theming.

PKD-
I live in VA and have vistited both parks often. BGW does have 2 nice coasters, but you can't beat PKD's 11 monsters. The waits at PKD are usually short except for Hypersonic and Volcano which are normally 1-2 hours.

BGW!!!!!!!!!. Pkd is full of crappy 1 minute long proto type rides. They all suck. They never work or they hurt. BGW has 4 good, long, smooth coasters. Food wise ,BGW is the better choice. PKD IMO is a very dirty park. BGW is definetly better.

How hard would it be to do them both in 1 day (say a Tuesday or Wednedsday)...just riding the coasters and eating on the road between the 2 parks?

This very well may be but this has no significance to the original poster's question since neither of these coasters are at PKD.

Well according to your track record you've not even been to PKD, in fact you've only been to BGW, Kennywood, and Worlds of Fun.

I'm not being nasty, but it is not fair to influence someone's opinion about a park when you've not even been. If you have been then please update your track record.

I know, sorry, I should have been more descriptive!

The point I was trying to make is that you can do similar rides at other parks, whereas Hypersonic and Volcano are unqiue, so I would recommend doing those!

I think that you would be trying to pack in too much in one day.

Sounds like you thought about that response for a long time.

PKD is a nice park, and I really dig Volcano and Flight of Fear, but for overall experience, especially if you have a family, BGW is the better park. All five coasters are world-class (yes, even Wild Maus) and among the best of their types. The shows are top notch, the animals are cool, the landscaping and scenery is the best anywhere and the food is without question the best amusement park food I've ever had. Not to mention a real live bottle of beer is less than two bucks.

PKD is still a good park, and if you can work out at least a half day to visit, it's worth the time.

As I'm only interested in coasters I did BGW in 4 hours including front and back seat rides on Alpie, AC, and BBW. Also 1 ride on LNM, and 1 ride on WM. The park was moderately busy, but most of the seniors that were there on my visit looked around the shops. I also went on the train and Log Flume, and looked round the whole park including Ireland.

I arrived at PKD for 4pm but couldn't get it all the coasters in, and since Hypersonic lines are long and it breaks down ALL the time, you will need a day to increase your chance of riding.

I think we may try to do the 2 park thing on Tuesday. I really want to go to PKD and my husband wants to go to BGW. I hope we can get to BGW at opening and ride the major rides (if we really like them maybe we'll stick around for some re-rides) then take off to PKD (on the way back to PA) and atleast try to get on FOF and Volcano.
Thanks for all the input- hopefully I'll have 2 awesome trip reports to post next week!
