Beast trains "collide" at 5 mph, riders sent to hospital

Posted | Contributed by PKI_MAN

Two trains collided at 5mph on the Beast at Paramount's Kings Island, after slick skid brakes failed to completely stop the train. Several riders were treated and released for minor cuts and bruises.

Read the report from AP via WKYC.

Why me, there are coaster engineers and designers that post on these boards...so what is this code you speak of?...enlighten me.

RideMan:  I'm not sure why the train was stopped at the station brake closest to the station, but I remember a few times being stopped and held at the far station break and the close station break.  When I'm on the Beast and the train passes the far station brake and then stops me at the close station brake, I get worried and wonder if the train will actually stop before hitting the train in the station.  So I've been stopped at the far station brake most of the time, but a few (about 1/20 times) I'll (or the train) will stop at the station break closest to the station.  It's very strange, and it's really sad news that an accident happened on the Beast.  At least nobody was hurt. *** This post was edited by KIBeast on 10/15/2001. ***
I wonder what the Consumer Product Safety Commission's report on amusement safety will say on this accident in it's next report.

"Trains collide on Beast, sending riders to hospital!"

They probably won't say it was going 5 miles per hour, and that it wouldn't say that the riders were only treated for minor cuts and bruises.

Some body asked about the block structure so here you go

1. Dispatch to the top of lift one

2. Top of lift one to 1/3 up lift 2

3. 1/3 up lift 2 to the top of lift 2

4. Top of lift 2 to the end of break #3

5. end of break #3 to 2/3 in station

6. Break #4 to side Track

so 2 trains in the break run higly possible and as a former Beast driver i speak from expierience when i say a little scary but i would have to say that If it was a little rainy out i can see how the trains could slide past its final position on Break #3

CPgenius: where did I type the word designer???? Y'al should know what a level 3 is.....
I was their on Saturday and I'm just wondering how this could happen given that train (1) is going up the hill while train (2) is going up the second hill and if you guys have rode the beast - when you get to the top of the hill the other train is heading up the second hill and then there is train (3) in the staion and they keep those train so far apart at least when I've been there; also, when (1) train is in the station the other is way back there, while the other train (3) is still doing it run

ALL CLEAR

Cobra, that would explain the final positions of the trains. Had the <ahem> incident happened in the station I would have not expected to see a train on the final brake run. At least not with another train on the second lift. That also suggests that the only train that was moved between the incident and my observation of the ride was the one that got rear-ended.

More speculation, of course. :)

As inverted29 stated the beast blocks do overlap their are also 5 brakes on the bridge 2 trains can be on the bridge at the sametime
CPGenius:  You certainly DO know the code Why Me speaks of..  he's talking about the infamous Code Red.  You know, the Code Red that was called on Private William T. Santiago because he was a subpar marine.  The Code Red ordered by Colonel Jessup in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba...

Gimme a break Why Me..  everyone here enjoys the insight that Dave (Rideman) gives us.  I for one seem to learn something every time he is kind enough to post anything on this site.  WHO CARES if he's not 100% right about everything.  His speculation rivals anyone else who would give you the time of day to figure out WHAT might have exactly happened.  Thank you Dave for giving us/me your ideas.  I consider them well founded.  Thank you Jeff for allowing me and others the access to this information FREE of charge.  Sheesh, things people will find a way to complain about.

And by the way, outside of speaking to the press, I've never met any engineer or maintenance worker/technician that subscribes to this secret society/ninja code thing you speak of.

Quite the opposite in the software industry, especially as it pertains to the Internet. Don't understand something in a programming language? Someone will undoubtedly help you out.

Rideman,

As an engineer in the chemical industry I will be happy to help anyone to a general understanding of issues.  I will also provide you with a lengthy education if you want on subjects where I have some expertise.  There are certain areas that this does not extend to as far as the general public and also many people within the industry.

First, anything that involves propritary information about my companys business or the business of other companies that I deal with.  This includes safety information, business information, and chemical process information.

Second, anything that is my opinion that might be construed or misconstrued to be the opinion or position of either my company or an engineering standards organization.  This would include accidents that I don't have any special information about.

Third, if I am involved in a safety investigation or have non-public information about a safety investigation, then my opinion will not be expressed outside a small number of people until the final report is issued.  (This avoids the kind of stupidity that occurred with the Los Angles coroners office this summer when someone who didn't know what they were talking about said that an amusement ride caused a death which was actually due to natural causes.)

This is not some secret society/ninja code.  It's just keeping you mouth shut when you should to avoid hurting yourself, your employer, or others.  This is true in various form wether you work in amusement parks, manufacturing, insurance, or the local burger joint.

Anyone know if the Beast will be running this upcoming weekend?

-Alan
