Atlanta entrepreneur is Iraq's 'king of fun'

Posted | Contributed by General Public

Atlanta entrepreneur Hisham Araim has managed to open amusement parks in Iraq. He left Iraq in 1979 when Saddam assumed power, and has plans to return for a new park when the current climate settles down.

I think that's an easy way to make me look bad, but it's not correct.

You know what I think? I believe this thread got under your skin because you still believe that non-whites are inferior to you. I don't think you use the n-word much because you prefer others that more directly liken African-Americans to particular animals. And it infuriates you to no end that anyone would feel sorry for having any thoughts like that.

I believe you are one of the people still walking around with a chip on your shoulder as if every person of color and foreigner with a good job, a nice home and a better way of life has taken something directly from you. You deserve it, they don't. You resent them having it. You can't explain why you resent it, but if you were honest with yourself you'd have to admit it's because you believe they are beneath you and should occupy a lower rung in society.

Yikes! I believe you don't know General Public too well, as that was as far from the truth as you could have been.

Hold on a minute here. I have agreed with everything you said thus far CP, but before you let this guy write all that you've said to anger, allow me to point out that GP probably doesn't feel that way. It's more likely that a lack of direct experience, or second-hand information, or too much of the boiled-down media-served stuff they call news has him not caring about race relations. Just because he doesn't care, or sounds like he doesn't, doesn't mean that he feels that strongly about persons of color or different nationality.

Now it's the media's fault?

I was waiting for GP to show up, but I suppose I'll go ahead and speak up before this goes too much further.

Why in the world would this discussion tick anybody off so much unless they had some major, major problems with race? Well, it could just be that you submitted a news topic and thought everybody was just supposed to talk about that and that only. GP contacted me via e-mail and explained himself. A perfectly logical reason? Maybe, maybe not. But it sounds a whole lot better than 'Klansman', right? I think so.

So I'll shut off the van-mounted double-barreled OverKill InstaFlame cannon and apologize that you had to see that. Call off the League of Justice. General Public's not a bigot or a bad person...just a little possessive of his threads.

I have a response to that, too--and it doesn't even raise half as many bruises. GP, go read the DDR thread. It's long, flourishing, successful and rambles all over the place. I think I took up a couple pages teasing Mycke Phrease for losing in DDR to Jeff. You didn't see JP screaming "Shut up! Shut up!" (on the board anyway, who knows what he said at home) he just rolled with it. After that was over, we got back to DDR. In the course of the thread's life, I bought a PSX, then DDR, then MadKatz Pads, then RedOctane Ignitions. It's just the nature of discussion. It veers, it rambles, it takes on a life of its own. Don't worry 'bout it.

Besides, Wahoo and I were never really mad at each other. At worst, I thought he may have been insensitive, but that was about it. It wasn't alla that.

A new thread is just the beginning of a conversation, that's all. Some go on and on and some die. Next time, just try to roll with whatever comes up.

There we go, I think that was the root of the frustration with GP...He just wanted to talk about the damn article! :)

Anyhoot now that all that's over, which way with this thread roll? This might be the ONE thread that hasn't mentioned M:TR OR his cronies! Wait...CRAP!

Sorry for the delay here, just got home from class.

Thanks for understanding. I think we should all just simma down now. I think all that needs to be said about that has been.

No Jeff...all I meant by that is that we are inundated with information. It takes a bit of effort to sort it out and make critical judgements. I have a feeling that Wahoo and General probably do not harbor ill will towards other races, and that their comments were most likely the result of this weariness.

The reason I offer this is because I've found myself thinking this way before. But then I end up kicking myself for being lazy.

I would no more point my finger at the media and blame it for anything than I would a mirror (so I guess I do blame the media in a way).

Sorry Legendary, just wanted to clarify.

So I heard from the Lemon Chill guy that this man will build a 500' coaster with 11.5 loops...including an element that never even saw itself as a bent paper clip on Ron Toomer's desk... *** This post was edited by janfrederick on 12/6/2002. ***

Funny thing with 'attention' and/or 'discussion' with this topic...compare the number of comments here to any other submitted news item. You'd have probably had 0-12 without me around. Really. Think about that.

Somewhere earlier in this thread, someone made a comment about having Martin Luther King Jr day off (school). I have always wondered why this occured. I think a much better celebration or reflection of this man would be to have school as normal, but devote the day to learning what he and others have done to promote equality and understanding. Albeit a day is certainly not enough, but simply giving the day as a vacation is not doing anything to help our future generations realize or understand why we have a day celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.

Now there is a coherent thought. I am with you Matt.

Gee, I get offline for a weekend and I miss all of the good stuff. Was I ever mad at 'Playa? No, I don't get mad at people I don't know nor have ever met. Why stress about it?

I do think General Public ruffled some feathers by suggesting that this topic wasn't worthy of discussion but even then he did have a point that we strayed way off topic.

Of course, I haven't read anything of substance that he has said about the topic either so I guess it doesn't really matter.

The one thing we can probably ALL agree upon (well, almost all, ;)) is that until PEACE comes to the region, a *Merry-Go-Round* is not only out-of-place, but also inappropriate...

LOL, so you wouldn't be mad at Saddam Hussien or any other dictator because you haven't met them (how's that for off topic).

It is a worthy topic--but probably not here. And I don't think the news will ever be discussed. I would like to invite you to deal with it, though.

G.P.

You have yet to comment once on the topic except to say, "I just thought it ws an interesting article, particularly the accounts of running the parks in Iraq and the comparison Mr. Araim gave between Dollywood and SFOG. Obviously he's paying pretty good attention to how the US amuesment business runs, so he can perhaps implement new ideas if and when there's a regime change in Iraq."

If that is all you had to contribute then maybe the topic wasn't all that thought provoking to begin with.

So you're mandating that all comments be "brilliant" and "thought provoking?"

You're in the wrong place.

Obviously.
I'm sure all your comments ever made are insightful and thought-prvoking, though. *snicker*

No they're really interesting because the article is interesting and the posts are interesting and hey look when I type things words show up on the screen and other people can read them. How interestingly interesting.

BTW, hardly anyone on this forum knows this thread exists anymore. The herd has moved on and your 15 seconds are up (though I can't shake the impression Wahoo and I took 10 of them).

I'm really not concerned with what people think about this thread. It's obviously dead. I'm just trying to provide rebuttals to these personal attacks. I guess 'I'm sorry' wasn't good enough though?

I really don't know why both of you continue. I don't hold grudges against either of you, so why you continue to use this behavoir is beyond me.
