Atlanta entrepreneur is Iraq's 'king of fun'

Posted | Contributed by General Public

Atlanta entrepreneur Hisham Araim has managed to open amusement parks in Iraq. He left Iraq in 1979 when Saddam assumed power, and has plans to return for a new park when the current climate settles down.

"That just ain't comedy."

...unless its a Jew saying "Jews are cheap" or a black person saying "Black people are fast runners" and then we (we meaning American society as a whole) laps it up. Which in turn, really smacks of racism itself.

The whole issue never really ends. There's never going to be a convienent conclusion, as far as I can tell.

Then again, a lot can be said when a person or group can see the humor in themselves. Just so long as it is understood that these generalizations are just that.

And I must say, Sr. Wahoo, that was a pretty mean thing to say.

Eric...who is a goofy white guy and proud of it.

Well at least I now know what comment triggered the avalanche of negativity toward me. And to think I thought it was the one regarding the shooting arcade.

I figured there weren't many cars in Iraq. The joke was, of course, referring to marketing schemes like SFWoA's carload specials. Having done some research I find that I am right. There are 52 motor vehicles in Iraq for every 1,000 people. Of those, there are only 36 passenger cars per 1,000 people.

I didn't use the term "camel jockey", but it is a form of transportation more common than the car. That particular joke wasn't meant in the way it apparently was received.

Edit: My Jewish father and my mother's Jewish boyfriend both freely say that they are cheap. And, guess what, I can't jump. *** This post was edited by wahoo skipper on 12/4/2002. ***

No, I can't be b/c I am not Jewish. Now, if my life were a Seinfeld episode I could just convert to tell the jokes.

Fine. You can be half-offensive with your jokes. Two-thirds to three-quarters if you cash in the credit from your mom's boyfriend. Yeesh. Everything's a contract with you.

Yeah, if they would only make a holiday card that said, "Merry Christmas to you mom and Happy Hanukkah to your live in boyfriend." Hallmark needs to get on the ball. *** This post was edited by wahoo skipper on 12/4/2002. ***

Yeah, it's a double standard, but what can any of us really do about it?

Can't we take this news for what it's worth?

Apparently a businessman currently residing in Atlanta at one time ran a collection of amusement parks in Iraq. What's so wrong with that? Read on that he is eager to return to pick up where he left off in 1979. That tells me there must be both a market and revenue stream from it.

As Jeff alluded to a couple times before this thread slid down the slippery slope FAST, don't judge the whole nation by those in power. I'm sure there are millions of common citizens in Iraq, who not too different from us, enjoy amusement parks. If someone has found a way to bring that joy into their lives, more power to them.

Don't get me wrong I'm not adding those parks to any trip planning, but I would like to know what they are like, uhm without the cheap humour. Seriously, what type of rides and attractions have they developed.

It wasn't cheap humour. It came at a great deal of expense to me--who got slammed for trying to be funny. It was bad humour. There is a difference.

Feeling a little like Saddam now? ;)

I'd like to comment but talk is cheap (I must be Jewish). You dont realise how hard it is to ride a camel. And Yes! We ride camels in the (Australian) outback too!

Gotta run (I must be Black)

The Cross Burning Freedom of Speech Rally and ceremonial Stoning is coming to a board near you!

So the real question is, 'did anyone read the article?'

Is that a Q-bot in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

You might wanna read the thread completely--there's obvious references to article factoids back as early as posts 4 and 5.

I read it and I find it interesting. I hope that Saddam is out of power soon, and this guy goes back to continue his work. Sounds really cool, and I bet the Iraqi people, would really really want to like Saddam out and coasters in.

I personally found wahoo skipper's jokes to be humorous. My father served in the Gulf War. Plus, my brother (who is a US Marine) might be getting shipped over there. So, I too, have a lot of reasons to not like Saddam, or his "people." And CoastaPlaya to me, you are the one that I see as racist. It seems every post I read that have posted in, you make someone elses post sound like they were the ones racist. This next comment is in NO way intended at you directly, but SOME of the black people I have come across seem to be MORE racist than SOME white people. My opinion is that they (the black people that are more racist than some white folk) think that the whites owe them something. Ok, I am done ranting. Bring on the flames.

It's all a witch hunt, eh? I thought so. I thought it was funny, but then again, I'm not one of those godly politically correct people our society rewards for making a stink about almost everything. Soon you'll be telling me it's biased that there are no white kids in my school's indian cultural society.

On topic, however, I hope this guy can eventually return to Iraq to help his park. make it a real gasser, just in a different way. (that was about SADDAM, so don't criticize me)

How many rides must a man go on, before you may call him a fan?

Now thats a whole new can of worms. Bring on the smack down.

While true of some blacks the same is also true of some whites.

I live in a house trailer, does that mean I am poor white trailer trash? I grew up a farm boy and sometimes listen to country music does that mean I am some dumb redneck?
