I'm disappointed that there is so much focus on inconsequential style.
It's not about style... it's about duplication of data. I loathe it. Quoting made sense on Usenet when you had to view the relevant material, but in a linear threaded forum like this, it's all there, all on the same page.

You cannot always be certain that your reply will fall directly under the post you are referencing. By the time you complete your message there could be one or several other posts between yours and the one you thought would be right above it... I don't understand why you make such a big deal of it.
Give me a break. I'd like to think CoasterBuzz is super-popular, but when does that happen? (Threads hijacked by the CPG don't count.)

Besides, it's the Internet equivalent of using curse words and exclamation points in a business letter to compensate for the inability to write. More often than not, a quoted post could more easily be started as, "I agree with jimmybob that puppies are naughty," and then go on to make your point. It's like school, where you don't respond to a test question with, "Because the scarlet 'A' represented," you start with, "Hester Prynn had to wear the scarlet 'A' because..."

So to review, there are two standards I'm trying to uphold here:

  • Avoiding repetitive data. Eventually, too much data begins to take its toll on performance.

  • Conversing like humans do. Humans don't repeat entire conversations back to you. Falls under the same category as prohibiting chat shorthand.
