Any one remember the "rotor"?

Great Escape had one until just last season. I used to enjoy it.

At the COSI (Center of Science and Industry) science museum of Columbus, Ohio there is a rotor style ride called "Centripetal Generotor" in the science park outside the rear of the building. It wasn't open when I vistited, but when weather permits it is open for riders to enjoy. I will be heading back this summer. Take a look.... http://cosi.org/visit/exhibits/bigSciParkRotor.htm

Of course, some of us miss "Time Shaft", a themed Rotor with lights that used to reside in Smurf Mountain at PKD. Damn Volcano the Blast Coaster:)

If you have a problem with clones, the solution is real simple—Stop traveling.
The Rotor at Lake Campounce looks like the one that used to be Kennywood. I always wanted to ride it when it was there, but my parents wouldn't let me.

My mind works in strange ways. Yeah with a chain driven lift hill and gravity.

The "rotor" at COSI is very cool. It took me a while to get up the courage to ride it, I was afraid of puking my guts out, but I really enjoyd it - didn't get sick at all. For those who have ridden it, is that how real Rotors work?

CoasterKrazy, at which COSI did you ride the rotor, or at what amusement park?
I was thinking the same thing, Phantom. Does anyone know if the Lake Compounce Rotor is in fact the one that used to operate at Kennywood?

The Rotor that used to be at Geauga Lake, came from Euclid Beach Park, the first time I rode it was when I was 5 years old, in 1958!!!! Also the flying scooters that they had at Geauga Lake came from Euclid Beach Park. And the Racing Derby, now called Cedar Downs at Cedar Point came from Euclid Beach, wish someone thought to save the Flying Turns and Laugh in the Dark. Guess I'm really showing my age!

Also, Magic Mountain has a Rotor, but it's not called the Rotor. You'll see it on the new reality show Thrill Rides Put to the Test on Discovery Channel. It was part of one of the challenges.

Indeed there was a rotor at cedar point. It was located where chaos is now at. I remember riding it when I was younger, and it was a blast.
bambi, when is that show on again?
GregLeg- Do you think this could be the beginning of Kennywood's ride rotation program? King Kahuna came from Lake Campounce, the Balloon Race at Kennywood went to Idlewild, and now maybe the Rotor went to LC. This is interesting.

The show will air on Memorial Day, May 26th at 9:00PM, Discovery Channel. Try to watch it, my daughter and her friend are one of the teams, that's how I know one of the challenges involves a Rotor Ride.

pkisycho: I rode the rotor at the COSI in Columbus. I wasn't aware of any other COSI, so I hope I answered your question.

That is really cool. :)

Hi Coasterbuzz!

I'm a team member at COSI/Columbus where I am one of the ops for the Centripetal GeneRotor. In case you're wanting some more information about our rotor, the top speed of our ride is 33 1/3 rpm (approx. 17mph), pulling around 2.5 Gs. The ride lasts about 55 seconds from start to slow down, keeping you at top speed for 30 seconds. We slow down our rotor leaving the floor down which causes you to slide down the wall slowly, along with putting black marks on the back of your shirt. :)

We are required to operate that way so we don't have to worry about someone's belongings, or heaven-forbid a part of someone, getting caught between the wall and floor. Once reaching the floor which drops two feet, everyone has to step into the "safe circle" painted on the floor and the floor is raised back up to the door.

We have a Chance Rides rotor which comes from an amusement park somewhere in New York. I was told which one it was when we first opened it (1999) but I can't remember. If you're in Central Ohio, stop by for a ride sometime. Or, you could drive down Washington Blvd. in downtown Columbus to get a good look at it. Off subject, but we also have an ArrowBATic vehicle in another area I work in named I/O.

Happy coasting.

Time Shaft at PKD, eh? Yep, that's the one I can remember riding. But since that one ride on Time Shaft, I have learned to avoid rotors....smart guy, that Rob....

bill, thinking GregLeg and TLP have something with the "ride rotation program".

P.S. The coasterimage photo shows a girl leaving the ride....she reminds me of my rotor *spins*....ugh!

SFEG had one until about 4 or 5 years ago. I remember the ride ops having a lot of fun with the guests while the ride was running. My personal favorite was when they would play 'Simon Says', and everyone on the ride would be trying to put their arms and legs out against the forces of the ride. Good times. Don't take my word for it or yell at me if I am wrong, but I think the one at SFMM is the one that SFEG used to have. All that I know is that they both have blue and white tents that cover them. It could be a coincidence though. Does anyone know when SFMM opened theirs?

Ha! I never even noticed that. She does look a little green.

I bet you guys have something with the source of the Rotor being Kennywood. You'd think with all the knowledge floating around on these boards that someone would have the definitive answer.

How many people who visited old Geauga Lake remember Rotor Fred? He used to ride all day every day. Seriously, he would just ride over and over and over.
