9/16/01: Last Day For Viper At SFOG

I got this from Mr. Ulrich, an ACE rep in the southeast. I'm sure most of you know him. Anyway...

What is life without ups and downs!?!?
It really is sad, because this was always my favorite ride. And especially since their aren't that many loopers still left in the US, and it was nice to have one in your back yard.

It's simple design was what made it so fun, and I didn't ride it enough this year. I think Six Flags, Inc could just as easily keep it on property and still build a new coaster next year. Instead of having 9 coasters, they could have 10.

Read up on Viper

Me thinks that SFoG might be replacing Viper with an Intamin Impulse.  That just makes sense.

Next Sunday, 5 hour drive can't possibly keep me from saying goodbye to a Schwarzkopf in the "appropriate" fashion...I will be screaming!  BTW, seems like a weird set-up for ERT, those aren't exactly next to each other in terms of park location, etc...

Uhh...the GASM and Viper are right next to each other
Too bad. When I went to SFoG in June, Viper was one of my favorite rides there. The lines were short, and the ride was fun. Nothing's better than going through a loop backwards with only a lapbar, very very fun! I don't see why it's being removed, though. It doesn't really take up much space, and if they needed space, they could've just moved the ride. Oh well.
Its a small ride, with only a loop and two shuttle ends in the air.  Honestly, I think that a new coaster could have easily been designed "around" the Viper, that is if the new coaster is going to be a full-circuit ride like a hyper or a B&M.

If the ride is going to be replaced by an Impulse coaster, then I can see the logic in removing the Viper.  But I really don't see that happening, simply because the park added a shuttle (read: low capacity) this year and can't see them doing the same next year.  Then again, who said the ride is being removed for another coaster?

I want to know WHY it is going. I don't agree with large parks putting in shuttles nowadays, but this one has been around, and has anyone noticed how FAST the crew always worked??? The line moved no matter if it was at Atlanta or Gurnee. It is something every enthusiast should experience, because it marks the beginning of the long shuttle launch design. Arrow's just had too many steps, though I like the drops!

I'm moving to Mexico!

Why wouldn't they open 2 shuttle(low capacity rides)in 2 years Rob Asough SF Great America built 2 this year.Since 1 hasn't opened they are gonna have 2 shuttles 2 years in a row too
I know that SFGAm did two in one year, that is true.  It just seems to me that SFOG is long overdue for a flagship attraction (much like SFGAdv has Nitro, SFOT has Titan, and SFGAm has Raging Bull), and another shuttle coaster wouldn't be that flagship attraction.

Going back to your comment about SFGAm doing two shuttles in one year, I look at it this way... together, V2 and Deja Vu were THE new attraction for the 2001 season.  if you look at the Deja Vu installations this year, they were all part of a larger investment.  SFMM built Deja Vu along with X and Goliath Jr.  SFGAm constructed Deja Vu and V2.  SFOG added Deja Vu and Acrophobia.  In my opinion, Deja Vu was never seem as something big enough to be a park's only 2001 addition, so they were added with other rides.

Yes, SFOG MIGHT do two shuttles in a row, but I doubt it.  I think they need something bigger and more promotable.  And like I mentioned earlier, who is to say it will even be replaced by a coaster?

The SFOG investors have never been happy with Viper's placement in the park.  The fact that Six Flags installed a decades old, used coaster here was one of the sticking points in the big lawsuit they filed.  Replacing Viper with a modern attraction like an impulse or whatever is bound to please these guys a little.  Six Flags is contractually obligated to make improvements to SFOG and SFOT, unlike their other parks.
A shuttle coaster shouldn't be a park's ONLY new attraction in a given year.  Their capacity doesn't allow for THAT many people to ride without having ENORMOUS wait times...

Careful people, Viper is the same ride as Montezoomas Revenge at Knott's and has been known to cause pre-existing brain aneurisms to burst. Consult a physician before riding to see if you have a brain aneurism. ;(

No, the park doesn't know where it's going.

No, their not saying why either.

This is NOT official by any means, but here is an interesting possibility as to the destination of the Viper - the coaster that ssssstrikes twice!  http://coasternet.danimation.com/news  SFoG article mentions Visionland!  At least not TOO far away.

It makes sense, since Visionland is probably on a tight budget when it comes to new attractions, which they will definitely need to stay in business.  But at this point, I think its wishful thinking that the ride will stay "in the area".  There are MANY small parks that it could go to, or it could go no where at all.
