Interesting how it managed to operate in "original" form for about 15 years before the state stepped in.

Not egg-shaped. Tead-drop shaped, otherwise known as Clothoid.
There is no difference between Rev's loop and those found on Shockwave, Mindbender, etc. In fact the reason Revolution was the first SUCCESSFUL coaster with a loop is precisely because the loop was NOT circular but rather clothoid in shape.

Note that in its early years, it didnĀ“t even have headrests!

Yes there is :) It's 'more round'.
You can even see the difference in pictures between Revolution, and it's next 'sister coaster' the Superdooperlooper.
Although the 'clothoid' was talked about as being the successful shape for a loop, most of those, I think, aren't even perfect clothoids. For example, when revolution is 1/2 way into the loop, the radius stayes constant until the downward swing. Basically, the top 200 degrees or so is a perfect circle.
In non-laymans terms, to further explain it, there is no pitch change of the car in front of you when you ride through the top 60-70% of the loop.
I dont' have 'proof', its just from years of observing and studying.
