2001 What Happened?

I want to know the good the bad and the ugly. Was 2001 an overall good year or was it like 98'?
I think it was good and bad.  New types of coasters, but lots of delays.
-----------------
My Top steel: Millennium Force, Magnum XL-200, Raging Bull, Desperado, Speed the Ride. Wood: Viper, American Eagle, Twister II, Zeus, Cyclops.
2001 was a big disappointment, IMO.  So much potential, so little delivery.
I thought it was much better than 2000.:)
Well, there were a lot of ride related injuries. But most of the time it is rider error.
It was good for me because i mainly went back and rode all of my fav woodies from 2000.

Exactly. How could 2001 possibly have been a disappointment with all the great stuff we got for 1999 & 2000?

Why was 1998 so bad? Over on this end, it was a great year.

...Wondering what the 2002 season holds for all parks...
It was great.  Think of all the amazing coasters that got built...Wildfire, Nitro, Titan, Hypersonic, V2s, Deja Vus, Talon, and even though it's still not open, X.  I think it was an awesome year.
-----------------
TOP 5
1. Alpengeist, 2. Magnum XL-200, 3. Superman: Ride of Steel (SFNE), 4. Volcano: The Blast Coaster, 5. Apollo's Chariot
Close Calls 1. Grizzly (PKD), 2. Batwing, 3. Montu
Seasupersonic said it pretty well.  We also can't forget great overseas rides like Expedition:Ge Force and Collosos.  2001 brought us two flying dutchmans to the other side of the US and the long awaited Phantom's Revenge!  A great year.

I doubt the injuries this year were any more frequent than in previous years. Don't buy into the hype.

As far as rides go, I was still loving Millennium Force and waiting a lot less to ride it. We got X-Flight, which wasn't a huge deal but I enjoyed it. Nitro was another great hyper, Talon was another great inverter. Hypersonic debuted. Flight of Fear became a new ride sans lap bars. I Shivered my Timbers. I got my first rides on Legend and Raven, as well as my first trip to Orlando since they started building coasters. My total track record exceeded 100 and I made it to a dozen different parks.

I don't know what world you live in, but I don't need a new record-setting coaster every year when there's so much I've yet to do. Best coaster year ever for me.

Jeff's right, there hasn't been a marked increase in ride related incidents this year. It's just that the mainstream  media is out trolling for every cut and scrape they can find. Five years ago a coaster that set up wouldn't have garnered a half inch of type space. Now it gets a quarter page.

2001 was great for me personally, as I got to ride White Cyclone and SD2K finally.  No crowds, no worries, no lines.  Granted, it was a terribly rainy day, but I was a winner with a park virtually to my wife and myself.  I was also able to see some other Japanese parks that have been difficult for me to reach.  September brought the Puyallup fair, and a great coaster back from its long winter slumber (it is only open 3 weeks a year), Coaster Thrill Ride-a Miller ACE classic.  I didn't get out much besides those 2 opportunities, so that would be my negative, personally, on the year, but I did add about 10 more coasters to my list.

Don't you want to know more?

alot of great coasters were built.  the closest one to me was x~flight.  VERY cool coaster.  I thought it was a good year.

You really need to get some more BRAN in your diet
i think they should add more wooden coasters. sure, i like b&m, morgan, arrow, etc.... but what about cci, personally i think that one way we could have a great year in coaster building is making good old fashion woodies.
2001 this year was great for me, I got to visit Cedar Point for the first time, I got to ride Deja Vu and V2 and Cornball Express all brand new rides which immediatly made it into my top 5 coasters.  Six Flags went on a spending spree in buying coasters this year so how could this year be bad, it can't.  This was by far the best coaster year of my life.

DA BEARS!
My Top 5 Coasters:
1. Raging Bull(SFGAm) 2.Millenium Force(CP) 3. Deja Vu(SFGAm) 4.V2(SFGAm) 5.Cornball Express(IB)

I don't know about y'all, but I almost laid a poo in my knickers when I heard about Goliath Jr, and Runaway Reptar;)

2001 was a great year for me personally, I got to visit OHIO for the first time ever visiting CP,PKI and SFWOA, this resulted in riding about 35 new coasters including my New Number 1 coaster MF:):)
I also managed visits to Alton Towers(Twice),Thorpe Park(Once),Chessington(Twice), and BPB(Once) which again was excellent resulting in a superb year for me.
However 2002 is already shaping upto be a much better year though, I will be doing my usual visits to Alton,Thorpe and Chessington, I will hopefully be visiting Germany to take in Silverstar, and the Big Trip of all is in June 2002 when I will be going to California with the ECC next year(I worked out I should ride about 50 new coasters on thats trip:) ) I cant Wait, And OH YEAH, I also get to finally ride my 100th Coaster in 2002 where it will either be Colossus at Thorpe or AIR at Alton:)

I also think that 2001 as a whole was still quite a good year for coasters, We got the revamp on FOF, We got DeJa Vu, We got the 4th Dimension, We got a revamp on Phantoms Revenge, There was also Talon,Hypersonic,X-Flight and Batwing,Runaway Reptar etc, so it was'nt a complete disaster by any means, 2000 was still better though;)

I rode Ghostrider for the first time(BTW, happy 3rd B-Day Ghosty-See Roller Coaster Rollback...)! And I started to become an enthusiast in 2001, starting with reading Coasterbuzz forums.
Good coaster year for me...but, 2000 was better still...(GOLIATH!)

I got to ride The Raven and the Legend this year as well as go to my first HalloWeekend event where I was very impressed. I went to my 2nd Coastermania, and it was less crowded this year. I got to power-ride on Magnum all three times I visited Cedar Point...including a 15-ride marathon during the night ERT finishing my last ride off with the legendary "Magnum Dan" in the ejector seat. I finally got a night ride on Mean Streak, and I got some nice laterals as well as airtime!

The Legend is probably my number 1 wooden coaster...I guess I'll have to ride The Beast when it's pitch black to decide. Although ERT on The Legend may make my decision a little biased...especially when the train over-shot the brakes by about 20 ft. making us have to be sent through again. :)

I'm not sure which year is better between 2000 and 2001. Last year I had some stuff going on in my life, and the day after school got out, I went to my first Coastermania, and all the anger and rage I had kept in for that school year was released on my first ride of the day on MF. I let it all out, and between the 4 rides on MF that day, I completely lost my voice and I couldn't talk for days. :) Let's just say I had a lot of feelings to release.

Also, basicly out of the blue, last year my brother and I went to PKI. A 4-hour drive both ways, and one helluva park. It's funny, because if he'd never seen my Amusement Today issue of SOB, we never would have gone. It's funny how that thing worked out. That was the first time I'd ever gone to a park without knowing the layouts of the rides. It was so awesome.

As a ride/experience stand point, I'd say that last year was better, but as a stand point of meeting other enthusiasts it would be this year. Hopefully, next year will be even better. I hope to go to SFGAm, Indiana Beach, and Michigan Adventure.
