2001 Internet Steel Coaster Poll underway

Posted | Contributed by Mitch Hawker

The 2001 Internet Steel Coaster Poll began accepting ballots on February 1 and will be accepting them until February 28.

Once again the polling algorithm best able to separate ride quality from rider quantity is being used to rate the steel tracked roller coasters that operated worldwide this past season. Results of the 1999 Internet Steel Coaster Poll, ballots for the 2001 poll, past wood poll results and more about the algorithm used for this poll and the annual Internet Wood Poll since 1993 are available at the website.

New for this year are the ability to rank what you love in a roller coaster, from floating airtime to slamming laterals. Also, for the first time, poll respondents also have the option of putting their name on their ballot for display on the website's completed ballots page.

If it was set up like a fill in the bubble ballot, I think it would get a wider response. I don't think I'll waste my time on it.
What's so hard about creating an ballot that is easy and quick to fill out?  Like CPgenius said,  a bubble ballet woud get a much wider response.  Like a lot of other peeps, I don't have the time to figure this thing out.  I don't want to sound like poop shoot, just my opinion.
I'm not saying it's poorly made, I'm just saying it's only purpose is for people to say "Ha!  The coasters at MY park are ranked higher than the coasters at YOUR park!"  What is the point in that?

I rank by how much fun I have not the elements in the ride

Did you even LOOK at the poll?  It just asks you to rank the coasters, not "consider the elements in the ride".

Yes, there's an optional section that asks you to rank different ride feelings, but that's completely independent of ranking the rides.

Er, you guys are reading *way* too far into this.  It's a poll, just like the one on this very site, except Mitch's poll you can rank stuff.

Spacecase, what are you talking about?  It's a *POLL*!  Many parks and coaster designers (CCI comes to mind) use this poll to advertise their rides.

Again, quit being such weirdos (I say that with the utmost affection :)) and either:

A. Fil the poll out (it's honestly not as hard as it looks)

or

B. Don't fill the poll out.

Seems like a pretty easy choice to me!

Have you ever considered that maybe it's not you that's the problem, but THE PARK? ;)

But Legendary, do you think this poll is the BEST EVER?  Is it UN-BE-LIEVABLE?

It's not that hard, people.  It just takes 15 minutes of your time & concentration.  God forbid...

Maybe we need a poll to judge the best poll. We can rank the polls according and adjust for the number of polls you've taken.

My God, folks... take the poll or don't. I doubt very much that Mitch or the world in general will care much either way!

Vote if you want, don't vote if you want.  This poll is admirable because it does take a stab at being rather accurate, but in the end, the notion that this is the one that "counts" is pure lame-ness.  Polls only count as much as anyone cares.  Its just like the reader's poll in something like Rolling Stone, which tends to be dominated by the likes of N'Sync, Britney, etc...  Does that mean that somehow Britney is better than, say, REM?  No, it just means that Britney is more popular...which means nothing....blah blah blah.  No poll is ever going to make everyone happy.  Its just an attempt to make a conglomerate of enthusiast opinion, which in my opinion is just backwards.  The fun is that we all have differering opinions on what coasters we like more or less, but once we compile all of the opinions and find the average....what's the point?

But Legendary, do you think this poll is the BET EVER?  Is it UN-BE-LIEVABLE?

Hilarious!  :) Actually, in my ever-so-humble opinion, this poll is the only one I fill out because of the scientific nature of it.  Of course, in the grand scheme of things, polls don't matter, but if you have a few minutes to spare, and can rank your favorite rides, then it's kind of fun to fill out

I still haven't filled out this years poll yet, partly because I have been on so many coasters now, it will take a lot longer.  Not to mention I'm getting worse and worse and picking favorite coasters, as there are so many good ones nowadays.

But Spacecase, you should fill it out, then you could help PKI have the "best coasters EVER!"  :)

Joe, who wonders why someone so intelligent could like such a craptacular park so much (did I say that out loud? Heheheh).

That was sooooooo confusing! !
I never understood the purpose for taking polls. Does anyone know?

I tried to take the wooden poll in the fall, and just could not figure out how to do it.  It IS confusing for some of us.  I understand that "scientifically" this is a good poll, but if half the people who want to participate can't figure it out (call me dumb), then they are missing out on a lot of input.

Its funny, I can imagine half the people who are complaining about this poll are the same people who begin those versus topics and "Why _____ coaster is better than everything else" posts.  In the time it took a lot of people to post their complaints, they could have began voting.  But your decision to participate or not is your choice, not mine.

The negative reaction to this poll is quite disheartening, to say the least.  I can understand if you find the poll confusing... I'll agree it can be a little intimidating at first.  But I urge everyone to take a look at it for yourselves, and not dismiss it solely upon what everyone else says.

Voting is important to some people, especially when it comes to this poll.  Most polls are simply popularity contests, where the coaster that usually wins is the one that the most people have ridden.  This poll is scientific, as many people have pointed out.  Want to see how important it can be?  Go to Custom Coasters' website, you will see that they use the results from the wooden coaster poll as selling points for their rides (go to each individual ride page).  For CCI, this type of vote is very important.

IF we (the imperial "we" here) went through the effort to take a poll on coaster polls...I think it's pretty clear that Mitch's is THE poll.  Why, you ask?  Glad you did...statistics, my friends!  The more responses, the more accurate the poll.  Margin of error decreases as total responses increase...

I don't exactly have GregLeg's dilemma, but I honestly can't say I could accurately rate EVERY coaster I've ridden, either...

Even now that there's around 50 votes, the results really don't look right. Vote people!

And Legendary, you have bad tastes. ;)

I still think it's a dumb-ass poll.
