2001 Internet Steel Coaster Poll underway

Posted | Contributed by Mitch Hawker

The 2001 Internet Steel Coaster Poll began accepting ballots on February 1 and will be accepting them until February 28.

Once again the polling algorithm best able to separate ride quality from rider quantity is being used to rate the steel tracked roller coasters that operated worldwide this past season. Results of the 1999 Internet Steel Coaster Poll, ballots for the 2001 poll, past wood poll results and more about the algorithm used for this poll and the annual Internet Wood Poll since 1993 are available at the website.

New for this year are the ability to rank what you love in a roller coaster, from floating airtime to slamming laterals. Also, for the first time, poll respondents also have the option of putting their name on their ballot for display on the website's completed ballots page.

WOW! I found that to be one of the most confusing things I have ever seen...
The only poll that counts in my book is my own. Also, it looks way too confusing and time consuming.
It's really not that bad, IF you can rank coasters.  That's where it gets ME, though ;)

I really wish there was a more simple way of voting.

"Yeah, they did it in Superman 3"
Realy I wish it would be easier.
Yeah; here's the IDEAL voting system:

What is the best coaster you've ridden?

Answer, e-mail it to the guy, and boom, you're done!

SAVE INVADER ZIM!

Yup, looks like a total waste of time to me.

Ride the New England Bush!
Why does everyone think this is a waste of time/confusing?

Step 1.  Copy ballot...Step 2.  Rank (or group) coasters by putting numbers next to them...3. E-mail it.  Took me no more than 5-10 min.

The more people that do it, the more accurate the results are.

Hehe, a little too time wasting for me...
Astro's got it exactly right.  The poll itself isn't hard at all to fill out.  Now, if you're like me and don't normally rank coasters, that's another story.  Filling it out isn't a problem, figuring out WHERE to place some rides is.

The poll may look (and I guess it is) confusing, but it works to get more accurate results. The simple ways of doing things always come out with the predictable results: Cedar Point, SFMM, and the big parks take the top spots, because thats where the most people have been.

Yeah, I've been following this poll for a couple years now but I never vote due to the hoops you have to jump through. It's easier to figure out my taxes each year. If you take the time to read the instructions and try to follow it, it actually is a very accurate system.

I don't understand why a simple form can't be created where I just fill it in in my web browser and hit submit. I imagine there'd be many more resposes.

Versus cutting and pasting text?

It took me a whole 5min to do it.

No, it's a waste of time because all people use it for is so they can tell everyone how much better their park is then another's, so it's a waste of time.  If you like being an ass, though, it's a good idea.

Ride the New England Bush!
Why waste your time filling this thing out when it really doesn't matter? I know what rides I like the best, and I do not care to see where they rank on some flawed poll.
Geeze, I never thought I'd say I prefer the reaction over on rec.roller-coaster to CoasterBuzz about something, but the negative reaction to Mitch's poll here is astounding.  If you don't like it, fine, but phrases like "if you like being an ass, it's a good idea", and "flawed poll" are a bit much.

If you don't care about the poll or its results, why do you spend so much energy dogging it?

No poll is perfect, but I think that most people with any kind of scientific mind would agree that, if the sample is large enough, this poll is the best measure of popular opinion. That doesn't mean it has to be your opinion. If you don't agree with a poll, deal with it, but don't dog it unless you participated in it.

Why answer many questions, when you are only suppose to find out what the people think is the best steel coaster? I rank by how much fun I have not the elements in the ride.
