Talk about unintended consequences:
When I switched car insurance a couple of years ago, I used one of those tracking apps for 3 months and got back a pretty nice refund on my first few months of premiums. It tracked speed, sudden stops, and driving during higher risk overnight hours. I can't read the article because of my work ad blocker, but I'm willing to bet that this was about more than a roller coaster ride. I'm far from the safest driver (at least I wear a seatbelt) and I still got the near perfect score that my agent said most people get.
Miles traveled would be good for me, because the car that I drive has only 20k miles after three years. But I launch off of every red light that I can. Probably not great for said score.
