I just know I'm asking for it...but here goes.
Where'd the famed Griswold scale come from? Obviously it has some connection to the "Vacation" movies, but I can't seem to find any reference to it in any of them. I probably missed it along the line somewhere. Everywhere I look online it gives the scaling, -3 to +5, with 0 being slightly favorable. Any ideas?

beeman65, wasn't Eric Griswold even running a site for awhile, WAY back in the days of Jim Serio (WoC, right?)...and the early URC...times sure have changed.
edit: BTW, 2hostyl's "ratings" are (obviously) based on the Griswold scale, but the descriptions attached are delightfully "raw"....

I actually *saw* Eric Griswold at SRM this year. And even though I *do* use a modified version of the scale, I only do so because that seemed to be the "norm" when I joind World of Coasters a few year back. Truth be told, I think the rating system is so esoteric that it's usefullness is severly limited. I give the scale a rating of WOMPS! (-1) :)

We saw Eric at SRM too....wouldn't want to tick *that* guy off, huh?
bill, impatiently awaiting jeremy's new scale....my *version* is a modified Griswold scale as well, you don't see it too often 'cause I never seem to actually complete my TR's....the computer has a couple that are nearing completion (eh, chris?)....I modify ratings based on wait times to give more of a rating for the park than for the ride itself....not really fair to the RIDE, I know, but it sure put a hurting on ST...

What's the story with Eric Griswold, Bill? Is he a behemoth?

It's now college football season. The only thing that makes coasters take a back seat. This also means Rollergator is the enemy again... for 4 months.
Incredible Hulk rating: 8.6754

TOGO!
It's never too late, is it? :0)
What eventually became the 'Griswold Scale' started as a simple 1 - 10, but I also wanted to inject a quick sense of positive vs. negative, which 1-10 left wanting.
So I shifted it a bit: -4 to +4. That was better. However, at the time I could not be entirely indifferent towards a coaster, so I clarified that '0' was still enjoyable.
Over time, I realized that for coasters that I didn't enjoy, there weren't terribly many levels of un-enjoyment, -1 to -3 sufficed for that. I dropped the -4. Conversely, levels of enjoyment were much more varied. Some amazing rides on the newly relocated Comet at Great Escape prompted adding a +5.
That's eventually what stuck and was given its name likely by someone on rrc.
Eric
