Maybe the new guy was right, people from NY and the northeast really aren’t taking this pandemic as seriously as they should be...
Daily infections per 100k are 3 and 5 respectively compared to 18 in Florida. It's a completely different situation up here right now.
I do think - totally anecdotally, no real data, just walking around the neighborhood and being at the beach on Sunday - there's a lot of complacency in NYC, like we've beaten it. A lot of half-masked compliance on the street, and the beach was split between fairly good social distancing on one end (but no masks on the sand, self included) and regular old beach parties on the other end.
On the other hand, very few offices seem to be open, indoor restaurants, theaters, etc. are still closed, so if you believe the key consideration is ventilation and the indoor/outdoor question, maybe we're doing OK.
My NYC coworkers are a little concerned about some observed complacency as well, but feel like people generally are not anxious to repeat the earlier part of the year. Agreed that here Orlando people are generally playing along in public spaces. In my neighborhood, they aren't observing anything. The kids are playing sports in groups of 10, people are having pool parties and large gatherings. I fully expect some localized community outbreak here eventually.
