Florida roller coaster building boom will yield 8 new coasters

Posted Monday, November 25, 2019 1:43 PM | Contributed by Jeff

Florida’s theme parks are in the midst of a roller coaster building spree of sorts. Between June 2018, when Slinky Dog Dash opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and October 2021, when Disney says Guardians of the Galaxy at Epcot and Tron at Magic Kingdom will have opened, the parks are adding eight new roller coasters.

I wore a parka to work today.

I wore a half zip sweater and I'm surprisingly not overheating yet. But there were more than a few folks walking across the street from the parking garage to the building with full on Ohio style North Face winter coats, ear muffs/hats, and gloves. I'm really hoping to get a Lake Eola walk in today during lunch.

I was in Ft Lauderdale last week. Simply beautiful weather. I was amazed that the outdoor bars/restaurants had their propane heaters on in the evenings when it was 70+ degrees out. That seemed pretty silly to me.

I got half-way to Eola today and chickened out. Not enough layers.

I was going to take my convertible out on Sunday, but then it clouded up, dropped 25 degrees and started snowing.

I walked past my motorcycle and camper in the garage on the way to the snowblower. I hate winter.

But then again, what do I know?

I was in a 7-11 in Tampa a few days ago and there was a woman buying a tossle cap and thick gloves. It was 72 degrees at the time.

I'm in O town this weekend. I'm hoping it's warm enough to sit by the pool. Cause it's snowing now in upstate NY

I'm flirting with the idea of trying to hit the Studios for Galaxy's Edge now that it is fully open. Any word on the scene? It used to be kinda quiet this week far enough away from either holiday...

They’ve been opening Hollywood Studios at 6:30 and selling out of the new ride’s entries by 8 so not so quiet.

Yeah, I've basically resolved that I will not see it until January at best. I thought maybe the app was just geo-tagging people (it thinks we live in the park almost), but no, it makes sure your ticket was scanned at the gate.

I hope it calms down by my trip in February.

Get there early (6:00 at the latest) but this ride is worth it, it wildly exceeded all of my incredibly high expectations. There is scene where just like in the movies, blaster bolts fly through the air, and it is a practical effect. I’m going to get up early again tomorrow to try and do it again.

I live in Michigan, and have friends in Orlando. Our on-going joke when I visit during the fall or winter is that you can identify tourists and lcals -- tourists are wearing shorts and tee shirts because it's so warm, and locals are wearing windbreakers and long pants because it's so cool.

The joke is usually on the tourists because they thought Florida was going to be warm enough to wear shorts and t-shirts. I learned my lesson and bring a warm jacket, scarf, etc.

Yeah. I mean we're going to put in the effort but I'd rather not. There are other rides open that early as well right?

Thanks, I had not realized the whole complicated-sell-out-virtual-line-thing they had running. So much for the days of showing up and waiting on a line. I'm going try it though.

Last time we were in Orlando was January 2018. I don’t think it ever got out of the 60s during the day, and dropped into the low 50s at night. Locals were bundled up wearing ski jackets, hats, and gloves. And there I was in shorts and a t-shirt, maybe a hoody at night. Of course back in Rochester, NY it was 10° and snowing.

But then again, what do I know?

It's not hard to spot the locals this time of year. :)

I’ll also defend the idea that our cold is colder. Because of the ever present dampness in the air, temps in the low-mid 50s here feel colder than the same temps up north. A few years ago I was shocked at how not cold I felt when I went up for a Cedar Point Winter Chill Out where it was probably in the mid to upper 40s. But every time I touched a car door I got zapped. And the car was covered in salt and sludge. And the sky was a depressing slate gray. Yeah, I’ll deal with the dampness here :)

I disagree. Day time humidity is not appreciably different between Orlando and Cleveland. Our cold is colder because we're not used to it.
