Interesting Cedar Point Facebook Hiring Post -- Grooming Standards

If you go to the Cedar Point Facebook page and scroll down to April 18, there is a real interesting “now hiring” post with what would appear to be a strategically placed photo of a gentleman with a beard and visible tattoos. And even more interesting are the many comments that were posted in response, most supporting the relaxed grooming standards, with a few people still stuck in the 1950’s.

Over the past decade or so, my park has relaxed our grooming standards and I know that many other parks, Disney included, have also relaxed grooming standards to evolve with the times and, of course, open up potential hiring pools.

While some will always claim that Walt is “rolling over in his grave” for these trends, it is an interesting evolution occurring in park operations today and something that many parks are trying to wrap their hands around currently.

You should join in, or at least look at the leeeengthy discussion taking place over at PointBuzz about this. Most CP fans are looking forward to improved customer service as a result of an expanded workforce, while others are outraged that the world would be coming to this.

I'm not sure what's worse - the stick-in-the-mud types that are equating people with beards/tattoos/piercings to un-showered hippies, or the people who are getting SUPER offended to the point of anger by them...

I'm happy to see them updating their standards, but man, that thread is a dumpster fire.

Are you saying that there is something wrong with un-showered hippies? You sure have a closed mind.

So are unshowered hippies bad or not?

I'm (poorly) trying to be funny.

I’m just glad I’m not the only one eating shredded cheese. And mayo.

I've long considered it absurd that Six Flags won't hire anyone with visible tattoos. If that's projecting the wrong image, why does their CEO sport what I believe to be fake tattoos in a video promoting the 2018 attractions? Of course they're not alone; most major airlines won't hire flight attendants with visible tattoos and even my best friend - who accepts my idiosyncrasies - warned me on one occasion not to show my tattoos "or they'll think you're a drug addict."

It ain’t just hippies...
For years we’ve gone to the various Amish auctions for garden plants, vegetables, pies, stuff like that, which are usually held on Thursdays. And man, I can’t even stand next to those guys. Yikes.
I’ve always heard bath day is Saturday, so I’m catching them late in the cycle, and I don’t know what laundry day is. But I’m pretty sure it ain’t Wednesday.

Hippies=good, unwashed=bad

Not personally a huge fan of tattoos and piercings but they don't seem to impact the quality of my tacos at Chipotle so I'm pretty sure my CP experience with it will be just fine.

Thought this was an interesting post, some things I agree with, others not so much.

Beards aren't a big deal but when you got people with neck tattoos and inch-wide gauges, it's not professional looking at all. You're not getting hired by the local law practice or investment management firm looking like that, and you can forget about joining the military.

Then again working at theme parks isn't exactly on the order of a "profession" so it seems to me like these standards are too high for those jobs. Let them look like unwashed hippies.
