Pays for admission?
After galavanting around PA the last week, we found a question that came upon us. Which ride pays for your admission? That is, what single ride, attraction, excitment, thrill, covers the $35 for admission. Example: I would pay $35 at Hersheypark, just to ride the Wildcat once, and then go home. It's that good of a ride. Or we all know MF pays for itself ($38) at CP. What ride pays for that admission in one lap or time frame (if it's a flat ride)??

i would say MF and Magnum at CP, but since I have a season pass, i really can't count them. Instead, here are coasters i haven't ridden that I wouldn't mind dropping a park's full-price admission cost just to ride:
1. Shivering Timbers
2. Coney Island Cyclone (yes, I know Astroland has a pay-per-ride system, but a ride on the Cyclone would pay for that plus gas money and hotel fees, also!)
3. Apollo's Chariot
4. Lightning Racer
5. Belmont Giant Dipper

Geez, there are a few, but two come to mind (one fair and one not fair). I would pay the $20- to get into Visionland just to ride Rampage again (fair answer to your question); the unfair answer is paying to get into Knoebel's just to ride Phoenix, the best woodie I've ever been on. That's unfair because you can get into Knoebel's for free, should you choose. (That's right - NO admission fee - you can choose not to pay, and then pay-per-ride. Free parking. Bring in whatever food/drink you want. Great, inexpensive food on site. Two of the best wooden coasters in the world. Great dark ride. Best bumper cars in the world. Beautiful, clean, heavily-shaded park. Fantastic employees. For the life of me, I just do not understand why people keep slogging over to some corporate cookie-cutter rip-off themer when there's a park like this around. But that's just me. End rant).

MooreOn: Have you gone to Hersheypark yet?? I hate to say it, but the Wildcat crushes the Lightening Racer. Don't get me wrong, LR is a very, very good ride, but "the cat is back."

Woody: I wouldn't say Knoebel's was better than Kennywood, but I would say it's in its league - they are, along with CP, easily the best traditional amusement parks I've been to. Knoebel's is smaller than Kennywood, even more "old-fashioned" and is probably just as good of a value, or better, if you don't plan on riding many rides and don't go the Pay-One-Price route. But it is sorely overlooked, and definitely worth the drive.

Why does everyone care so much about Knoebels? I am a PA resident, and I find that for the 25 dollar wrist band, it's a waste of money. The Phoenix is a great coaster, and Twister is ok, meanwhile the Whirlwind is only half a minute long. IMHO CP and Knoebels are certainly NOT in the same league. Knoebels is in the same league as Dutch Wonderland, a rinky-dink home town park with a few good rides. I'm also tired of people conversing over the whole brass ring at the carrousel in Knoebels. Big Deal, plus i heard that the rings would eventually have to be removed due to insurance costs of guests falling off the horses or hurting their arms on the ring dispenser. Great Bear@Hershey pays for admission (this coaster is proof a B&M doesn't have to be the tallest/fastest, yet still is a great ride), and Raptor@CP. AND Cedar Point is in NO WAY a 'cookie cutter' amusement park. A trip to CP was the most unique experience in my life. SF and Paramount are the cookie cutters, not Cedar Fair :)

For me, one night ride on the Beast at PKI is worth the admission and the drive. Now granted I haven't ventured into PA (that comes next year) so I can't really compare those coasters, but for sure experience nothing beats a night ride on the Beast.
As far as steel coasters go, well prior to my trip to CP this year I hadn't had any earth shattering experience on a steel coaster. My one ride on Magnum back in 95 was so-so (I know blasphemy! But bear with me) But for some reason, this summmer's trip to CP was a whole new ball of wax. From the sheer bewilderment of MF to the laughingly good time on the CCMR and the unbelieveable airtime on Magnum, I can't express the fun I had though I think I just did. Cedar Point will always be worth the money. Always.

I'm not happy with some of the changes that Paramount has enacted, namely removing so many of the flat rides, but I still think it holds some of the charm of years past. Maybe it's because I can see myself back then, or maybe I'm just holding on to a false hope that it could return to it's glory. I'm not sure, but I am sure it's not a cookie cutter park. At least not yet.

Uh, Andy, you'd better read those posts again. I did NOT call CP a cookie-cutter park; in fact, I said it was (along with Kennywood and Knoebel's) the BEST amusement park I've been to. As far as you not liking Knoebel's, that's cool, although I think it's probably unfair to call a park with a universally regarded great classic woodie, the best bumper cars in the world, and best dark ride outside of Florida a "rinky-dink" park. And as far as the costs goes, if you think it's too much to pay for the wrsitband just to get a ride on the Phoenix (by the way, when I was there in June it was $20-, not $25-), then YOU DON'T HAVE TOO. Get in the park for free, and just pay the two bucks to ride the coaster. How many other parks offer you that option? (Well, we can scratch CP off that list. And Kennywood. Oh, and PKI. And Hersheypark, and SFO, and SFMM, and IOA, and Disney, and ...).

I think Cedar Point is indeed superior to all parks.There are other parks with Great coasters but thats all they have.I would have to say Millennium Force and Raptor paid my admission,Wildcat,Lightning Racer and Great Bear at Hershey(Comet isnt a bad ride either)Son of Beast and Beast at Pki(Outer Limits dibbed a little)Superman:Ultimate Escape and Batman at SFO(but after looking at the park and how disgusting it was I wanted my $$ back)Batman and Robin at SFGAdventure...that will always be my fav there.
I can't say about Cedar Point, because I spend too much time there, but I've had two "worth admission" experiences. The first was Volcano at PKD (though I have a Paramount pass). The second was Superman: Ride of Steel at Darien Lake. I went there twice last year with the sole purpose of riding it.

Well, considering Holiday World is so cheap, and the lines are so short... I wouldn't mind paying the money just for a night ride on the Legend or Raven. In fact, I've done it! (I was really sick the rest of the day)
