"Walt's Folly" still going strong 60 years later

Disneyland's opening day, July 17, 1955, was a nightmare. Rides broke down. Restaurants ran out of food and drink, and a plumbers' strike meant drinking fountains were in short supply. Long lines formed at bathrooms. Bunting hid unfinished attractions. Women's high-heeled shoes sank into the fresh asphalt.

This reminds me of the Jurassic Park line, "When Disneyland opened, nothing worked!"

"Yeah, but if Pirates of The Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists."

The line is actually "When Disneyland opened in 1956, nothing worked!"

They actually did say 1956.

Well, if you really want to split hairs, the reference to Pirates is wrong, too - because that didn't open until 1967. :)

And to get more technical, if the Pirates malfunctioned they wouldn't eat people, just drink a ton of rum!

Growing up with yearly visits to Walt Disney World combined with 6+ as a Cast Member and now a 7+ year resident of Central Florida, absolutely nothing beat my first trip to California and walking into Disneyland. There truly is something special about it not duplicated at any of the Florida parks.
