The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has come up with a new way to stop Six Flags Great Adventure's controversial plan to destroy some 19,000 trees to build a large solar power facility in Jackson. What it can't block by regulation, the DEP will now try to buy instead.

This reminds me a little bit of the nutty anti-vax and anti-GMO people. Despite there being a scientifically quantifiable benefit, and some solid capitalism on top of that, people keep opposing this.

Flori-duh! I love the senator who cracks up at the end. That's classic.
I guess Rick Scott really is "too shady for the Sunshine State!"

It certainly is possible to build a solar farm over the parking lot. (http://cleantechnica.com/2010/08/03/solar-power-transforms-parking-...enerators/) I'm not certain how practical it would be, but I could even see them selling the spots for a premium "Keep your car cooler by parking under the solar array...) Again, whether it truly is cost effective is a whole different matter.
And that's the problem with all the "why don't they *just* build it such-and-such" arguments. If the project costs significantly more, it simply won't happen at all.
Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."
I can't believe no one has thought of just building it over the parking lot yet.
Sheesh. So obvious.
I wonder if the power companies are secretly involved with those who oppose the building of this project?
And... Remember the light-up glass solar-paneled roadway invention that was so popular on the internet a few years back? It would be awesome if they paved the entire park and parking lot wit that.! I am dreaming again.

With how much cronyism happens in NJ I'm thinking this definitely has something to do with it.
The plan I read was to cut down 19000 trees where they want to place the solar farm and then plant 26000 trees on their land to replace the lost environmental benefits of the 19000 trees that were being cut down. I'm not a environmental scientist but if all the studies show this to be true. Then I'd bet some company that is losing out due to the project is trying to block it via any means possible so as to save their cash influx from the park.
Now all we need is Fat Bastard Governor to make an appearance at Six Flags to state his views on this and we could really have a Jersey Circus going on.
