Part wood structure, part steel structure.

This just popped in my mind. I was at Big Chiefs in Wisconsin Dells about 3 weeks ago and I noticed on Zues (CCI wood) that the lift hills structure is made of steel but the rest of the rides structure is made of wood. It actually looks like they took 2 different coasters and connected them (although they didnt). Are there any other coasters out there that have wood and steel structure on the same ride?

CI Cyclone, I believe, has some wood supports in it.

Myrtle Beach Hurricane is a steel supported woodie.
GASM in SFOG has some steel supports where they built a tunnel for vehicles to pass under the lift hill.

Yeah, there's lots of steel-supported woodies, but that's not what Chitown asked about. The question was about coasters that have both steel and wood SUPPORTS ;)

CI Cyclone does have a mixture of wood and steel supports. I believe that was a fairly common practice at the time.

If you want to get really picky. A lot of modern woodies have metal supports somewhere. Two off the top of my head are Mean Streak at CP - there are numerous steel beams among the wood structure, and Blue Streak - while probably not original to the coaster, there are steel beams where the access road cuts under the first hill.

Well, if we're going to get THAT picky, Thunderbolt at Kennywood has a steel I-beam where they cut through to run Phantom. ;)

For that matter the bottom layering on Collossus's track is actually I beams. That was done a number of years ago.

I am not referring to wood coasters with a few steel beams sprinkled in. The Zues lift hill is all steel. The out and back part of the ride is all wood. That was the point of this topic.

The Comet at Great Escape (late of Crystal Beach) is wood track with steel superstructure. A great deal of the steel came from the Traver built Cyclone.

I just wonder why PKI didn't build SOB's lift out of steel. I can only imangine how much stress that wood at the bottom is under. I could see it splitting in a few years. I think somthing that size would have been perfect for steel structure, at least the lift anyway.

This is how to build a record breaking hyperwoodie! Make it barely taller than SOB(220'), a first drop of at least 215' at a 70 degree angle and return to the method that the CI Cyclone used but put the small sections of steel structure under the highest speed and stress areas with the highest speed and the highest laterals and positeive gs but keep most of the hills and speed bumps and the lifthill all wood! I think a true woodie to get by with being a record breaker for a wooden coaster must have at least 75% wood in it's supestructure to keep the public from getting confused! The GP is stupid(not by choice) enough to call Twisted Sisters or Hoosier Hurricane a steel coaster even thugh we know the difference! Of course itas not their fault they need to be educated but even I didn't know at one time that a woodie was only base on track design!
