Highly anticipated Goliath will open a week late at Six Flags Great America

A harsh winter has resulted in a later arrival for Goliath, as Six Flags Great America officials confirmed on Saturday that the new wooden roller coaster will open about a week later than its previously projected Memorial Day-weekend debut.

Got to check this thing out in person yesterday, and all I can say is wow. Admittedly we (I guess everyone) had a horrendous winter, so I can understand why they'd be late to open. And there's still a good amount of the lift/stall that needs to be erected.

But when this thing gets finished, it's going to look incredible. Already, the turn-arounds and inversions look very strange and impractical, but in a very good way. Gone are the days of transitions as smooth and gradual as you can get them. Cannot wait to see Goliath in operation.

I call Cedar Point my home park even though I live in the Chicago Suburbs.

Oh Jeez! This could not be worse. Although I swore I'd never plan another trip around the projected opening of a roller coaster, I purchased a nonrefundable airfare to Chicago after the folks at SFGA assured me that Goliath would open Memorial Day weekend. It would cost me about $200 to change my itinerary and I can't afford that. Also, I used points from a credit card to book a free hotel room that weekend and now have to contact Choice Privileges to see whether I can get my points back.

I volleyed back and forth between the 2 sounds, and eventually settled on the trombone. It was a tough call

I disagree. There's something about a silly little ditty played on a tuba punctuated by a descending dissonant mess of trombones that's hilarious. And fitting, when someone fails miserably.

Honestly opening only a week late at this point seems unrealistic. They are still building the ride, correct? They basically have 30 days to finish the structure, commission from the manufacturer, get licensed, and train a crew?

Yes, it's the out of tune trio of trombones that make the TPIR fail my favorite. The Zonk one is okay, but it's too professional, especially that guy that's trying to break it down there at the end.

OK, you have a point with the tuba. But this is the best version:

This article makes me think they are not going to make that "week later" time frame.

As others have stated, providing a time frame for a ride opening can be a tricky (unless you're opening a B&M).
