Germany's Ring Racer may finally reopen next month

Posted Wednesday, June 26, 2013 2:42 PM | Contributed by Jeff

The long-anticipated RingRacer at Germany's Nurburgring racetrack is set to join the ranks of the fastest roller coasters in the world when it reopens this summer after a four-year delay. Within weeks of the debut, a problem with the launch system forced the closure of the new coaster. A few months later, an explosion while testing the pneumatic launch injured seven people and damaged a nearby building, according to the General-Anzeiger newspaper.

Well, technically, Ring Racer entertained at least a few for a hot minute while Flying Turns has yet to see the first paying customer. I don't know which is the greater shame.

What I didn't realize is it only went 80 mph when it debuted, so it still fell short compared to KK, TTD, and Dodonpa. (which the article lists as Doponpa). And I knew nothing of an explosion. Jeez. Then in the meantime Formula Rossa (once again misspelled as Formula Rosa) has come along to beat em all? Oh well, poor bridesmaid Ring Racer.

My understanding is that the air launch system has all sorts of problems once you go past 100mph. Shame, really; I still think the launch on Dodonpa is far more thrilling than Formula Rossa.

While Ring Racer has had riders, it was my understanding they were all VIP's. No paying customers yet. Additionally, Dick Knoebel (and perhaps other employees) have ridden Flying Turns.

Jason, you also forgot that Voyage's Timberliners also ran with people as well. My money has been on Voyage's Timberliners opening first, so hopefully Ring Racer has a catastrophic failure so that I win. Flying Turns won't open because the decal is upside down and Kozmo isn't my friend.

I didn't forget. I was responding to RCMAC. He was talking about FT and RR, not V.

Speaking of "V", I should break out that movie and watch it this weekend. :-)

Video of Flying Turns testing with incomplete chasis a few weeks ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8cdZ3Aa0zM

More recently, All American Thrill was at Knoebels and grabbed photos of the (completed?) chasis testing: http://www.allamericanthrills.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=765&p=6422#p6422

It could come down to the wire between RR and FT :-)

Not trying to be an Ahole, but it's Chassis.

Oh... He meant chassis. I was trying to figure out what he meant. Thanks for clearing that up, Tek. ;)

To be correct, the term is "chassis re-assignment".
