This is all before my time (or when I was very young) but I seem to remember pay toilets in different places so they must have hung on into the 80's in some capacity.

I know it always comes up as a joke, but I want to say Conneaut was among the place that had them in the early 80's (1981 or 1982). Or am I mixing up memories?

Back in 2003 at Coney Island, I recall having to pay a very scary-looking old lady 25 cents to use the facilities.

Despite being the resident Showtune King (queen?), I'll refrain from busting out "It's a Privilege to Pee" from Urinetown.

I hope Dick K doesn't read this thread... "People gotta pee"...

LOL, I remember a similar experience a year or two before that. Score one for the "gentrification of Coney"... ;)

No, it's a good thing. Once you're able to self-reference, it means you've not only been here a while, but that the things you said were relevant enough to remain relevant once the conversation begins to repeat itself.

Just a couple of points as I am arriving late to the party...

You do realize that demand pricing is already being used for park admission. Demand pricing, reservations, the whole bit: (site). To the extent that they don't even publish their admission rates.

On the subject of pay toilets...places that have used them have learned the hard way to provide some form of free urinal, otherwise the side of the rest room building starts to stink real bad.

I only saw pay toilets at Camden park in the '80s. I am the almost the same age as Gonch (but don't tell anyone).

Of course they had pay toilets at Camden. Do you know how much it costs to keep those restrooms stocked with corncobs? ;)

Dave: Discovery Cove doesn't publish admission rates in part because it's in the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" category.

But, yes, DC has had a reservations-based model with price fluctuation from the day they opened. That's a little less interesting than if a park converted to that model.

Discovery Cove starts at $200. That's hardly exclusive pricing. It's about the same as two Sea World admissions.

Be careful, you might be accused of being elitist if $200 isn't that exclusive!

No one said paying $200 for a luxury was bad. The implication was that if you dont think $100 is ever a lot of money to anyone after adult hood you dont gave a grasp on the real world.
