Odd how I don't think either of the two things independently would have triggered a response: raising your kids in a filthy house or leaving your kids by themselves for a day while you went somewhere, but the combination suddenly makes news.

I'm still trying to take in the "with her boyfriend" part after seeing that mug shot. Yeah, I'm gonna be that mean douchebag, but only because she's worse for leaving her kids. (/me does Home Alone face)

Uh huh, because a 7, 10, and 12 year old would have nothing to do at Holiday World.

Were none of y'all ever left home alone when you were 12? Or 10? 7 might be pushing it without other kids, but I could still conceive of it.

I think the bigger problem might have been the filth, rats, and lice.

Seriously, I was left alone by my parents at those ages, BUT I had a grandmother and aunt and uncle within easy access, and my parents never left me alone all day.

And we didn't have filth, rats, or lice to deal with.

I'm not the greatest parent in the world, but I'm glad there are people like this to make me look like I am.

I suppose if the house is rat-infested then they weren't exactly left home alone...

Yes, so mom could run a quick errand to the store or pick up...neither of which were 100 miles away.

I would expect nothing less from a Hautian. But in her defense, the kids probably weren't finished making their batch of meth in time to go.

Since the kids are neither ninjas nor turtles, I don't think the rats make a suitable guardian.

^If this is an example of her parenting skills, a rat would be a suitable guardian.

I would be home alone while my mom would be in Kansas City for work related trips when I was around that age. Of course, my aunt and uncle, and best friend were both a few blocks away, which is where I spent most of my time anyway. I had the option of getting on/off the school bus at either place, and would usually just go home to play on the computer (EchoQuest rocked!) or read a book. Some of those nights I actually slept at home, but I usually just walked back to my aunt and uncle's place for the night.

Ok, enough of the memory lane trip. lol

Given the evident state of their living situation, though, I can understand some of the concern of being left alone with the parent 100 miles away and no apparent "guardians" for them.
