SFGAm Whizzer & upstops

I was just at a website that said Whizzer is a side-friction coaster. If memory serves me right, that means there are no underside wheels. Is this right? It just seems strange to me that I would never notice that on it.

Why can that never happen?

I've heard it is braked on the sides of the cars, maybe that's what they actually mean. If it was a true side-friction, the drops would only be able to be several feet high to keep the speed neglegible. I've never ridden, so I'm not sure on this one, but I bet they are talking about using brakes or something that are located on the side of the train instead of the bottom.

Yah. The brakes were on the sides. The trains were just like the Jet Star, no guide wheels. The upper and lower wheels were grooved to fit the track snugly and didn't need guide wheels. The Whizzer is most definitely NOT a side friction coaster in the classic sense. They stopped making those after John Miller invented guide and upstop wheels.
