The New York City Planning Commission unanimously approved Mayor Bloomberg's 47-acre rezoning plan for Coney Island -- one officials say would preserve the area's dwindling amusement industry while also bringing 4,500 new apartments. The plan, pending council approval, calls for creating a new 9-acre outdoor amusement park off the famous boardwalk. The new park would be part of a 27-acre "entertainment and amusement district" that would also include indoor rides, games and other entertainment and high-rise hotels.

Guys -- and gals -- I was just there last week, for the first time. At the entrance to the "Wonder Wheel Park" -- I assume part of the former Astroland? -- a sign noted the they will be there "this year, and the next, and the next . . ." Nearby was a sign for the "new Dreamland, coming summer 2009." (The rest of Astroland?) There appears to be a large metal building under construction next to the rides (I guess that would be to the west), whatever that's going to be.
