Does a TA2K's Speed count?
Alright, so now the park in Japan is building thier coaster that is over 100 mph. But this is a launch right. I think it is incredible! But would it count? Because it is not really a gravity based rollercoaster. It is a launch. This is much like the thing if Superman should count for height. I think that that is a coaster, but since there is a launch on TA2K, and it isn't based on gravity, rather on the thrust. Would it be more of a feat if there was a 400 footer and it go 100. Now don't get me wrong this coaster looks incredibly insane but where does it stand in the speed issue. I might say that it should but i can't really decide yet. I think that Hulk is a coaster so yes. But what will the officials say, what does everybody else think.

a gravity based ride would use the energy that it takes on the drop and use it through the ride. but i think that it should be cause SUE and other launched coasters get speed recognition.

I know a few of you are afraid to accept reality... Japan will be breaking a few records, so don't try to find some kind of loophole. They already have the longest, tallest and fastest steel coaster in the world, and are about to get another tallestb coaster in the world to break their previous record.
Face the facts people... The Japanese have us beat for the time being. A coaster is a coaster is a coaster no matter how you look at it.
This coaster in question may accellerate 0 to whatever in so many seconds... but the real speed comes after the crest of the first hill... once there, gravity takes place and that's where the coaster gets the full top speed.
To settle this:
1) It's a real coaster
2) It's full circuit, so ALL records will count.
3) It's got us beat here in North America!!!

So, it get's it's speed (also could be called energy) from air. Well, conventional coasters get thier energyy from the chainlift, so if TA2Ks don't count, neither do conventional coasters. Same thing apply to S:TE, S:UE, V2, and any LIM/LSM coasters, except they get energy from magnets.
Energy could be replaced by speed anywhere energy is said in here, if that makes it easier to understand.

Bryang: When was a speed announced? Also, the official press release called it a freefall ride, not a coaster. What would that have to do with the fastest coaster?
(If they get permission for the Stratosphere ride, it probably won't be the fastest. Stan Checketts has some amazing things up his sick, twisted sleeve for the near future.)

at 700+ ft. the possibly new stratosphere ride has to be more than 116 mph. I don't think good ol' stan is gonna hit over 700 ft. for a while. I seems like whenever we get records they have to beat it.

What makes people think that the only people who can build anything decent is Americans? I despise that kind of thinking. That there is crossing the boundaries between national pride and being just plain prejudiced against other countries. I have a strong sense of pride for our country, yet I know that other countries can do some very good things. Sony? Toyota? Sega? There is some stuff for you. As StarCoasters said, where are the majority of the coaster manufacturers located in this world? Intamin? B&M? America makes some very good things. So do other countries. Come on people, just let it be.

Why does it seem like people get insecure about japanese coasters? It's like there is some kind of national pride in coasters and I have no clue why. These things are half-way around the world, so does it really matter or impact anything in the states in any way? Just like when SD2K came out a lot of people were trying to badmouth that too, saying that MF looked like it was better. Just let it go, having a coaster be beaten by some coaster halfway across the world does not matter. Just enjoy what we have here and hope we will get the same. And to answer the question, of course it counts, if for no other reason that the fact that it will be going just as fast after the drop, which would be "gravity-based".
Why is this topic about the country that has the coaster? I wrote this in reference of the COASTER. K? This has nothing to do what country it is in. There is nothing wrong with any other country and there is no reason for this thread to be about why bigger coasters are being built in Japan. It was a simple question.
