Teenage girl falls from Ferris wheel at Joyland

Man, not another one. The girl was obviously at fault from the witness' view. It's sad that people can't follow simple directions at parks. Hope the girl recovers, and learns a lesson from this.*** This post was edited by DS 4/20/2004 1:20:08 AM ***

I wonder if the hinge pins for ferris wheels could be redesigned to introduce some heavy damping if the seat swings beyond a certain limit. Seems like someone manages to kill themselves this way every 2-3 years.

I know that it's rider misconduct if you swing the seat, but if we design roller coaster seats to make it almost impossible to kill yourself it would seem that we could do something to make it harder to kill yourself on a ferris wheel without putting the riders in cages.

I was just saying that the lastest reports have pratically been females so please show me how thats being ignorant. I could see if i said females are not as smart as males but that wasnt the case.........it seems that some people just survive off making smart comments. If that makes you king of the mountian then by all means go ahead.

I just hope this incident is the last for a long time being that its just April. But yet we still have some people complain when a park adds extra seat belts.

I have always had a phobia of Ferris Wheels. This is the exact reason why my nerves get tested on these things.

Even though I dont rock the seat, I am always afraid the seat wont stay in an upright position.

Because of things like this is exactly why I hate them too Chitown. Would have made the news a while back if somone was in it, but a car flipped at SFWoA and lost the mat. I don't think I can get onto another one again.

Regardless of the male/female thing, it all boils down to listening to and following directions...but there is a higher number of kids/teens being the center of things. "Please don't rock the cars". You hear it before you get on every ferris wheel and sky ride, yet today's kids/teens don't listen. This is a result of that and should be used as an example.

Chitown, I am so glad that I'm not the only one who doesn't like Ferris Wheels. I have the exact same fear as you, the car not staying in an upright position. I freak out if anyone even Thinks about swinging the car.

coasterzak, strangely the one at SFWoA/GL is the only one I feel "semi-safe" in. I don't really like it because of the heights (a little afraid of heights) but it is tolerable to me. Well, at least it was tolerable.

My wife, who will ride ANYTHING up to and including the most rough and tumble SLC will not go on a Ferris wheel if you pay her one MILLION dollars... I discovered this on one of our first "dates". We went to the fair, rode everything we could think of... then I thought, why not wind down with a relaxing ride on the Giant Ferris wheel so we could look at the lights of the midway... bad idea. She was so upset we asked to be let out half way through and it took her a good minute to calm down enough that she could get out of the car. Mind you, she wasn't screaming, just really really frightened. Now, the gondola type cars that you see on the bigger wheels, those she can do... but the older style tippy cars... uh uh.

Ok, confession time. I'm afraid of heights. I hate "carnival-style" ferris wheels with a passion and in order to get "sky pictures" of Spinning Dragons, I had to muster up all of my bravery and ride Skyliner. I'm fine on the bigger ones, like Collossus at SFStL, but little ones freak me out.

I hate ferris wheels ever since I rode The Zodiac at PKI back in the 70's. The Zodiac is that 2 arm double ferris wheel where you are in a cage. One side is up as the other side is loading. I remember my older brother turning that thing up in the air I thought the chains would break.
