Only vertical drop?

Is the Oblivion at Alton Towers (UK) the only vertical drop coaster in the world? and what a ride!! hanging on the edge for 5 secs looking down into the big black hole waiting to drop is unreal!

There is also the G5 in Taiwan. Also a B&M Dive Machine.

Not to mention the Ultra twister at Astro World. It has an 85 degree drop. That's pretty steep, especially given that the the B&M dive machines are not quite vertical (87.5 degress or so). Either way it's a helluvan angle. *** This post was edited by Camel on 6/14/2000. ***

The Thrust Air 2000 is the only complete circuit coaster with a 90 degree drop, But it is only a prototype.
Some Shuttle Coasters have them, Maybe Backwords drops but they are drops.

And Do the Impulse coasters Have a 90 degree Tower? (SUE) That one is a forward drop if it is 90 degres.

Are you sure spoon1e? 1.5 degrees is pretty tough to measure. I am not 100%, but I got the 87.5 degrees from ultimaterollercoaster and it may or may not be correct I suppose. I can't find anything to back up either claim about Oblivion. Goto: http://www.ultimaterollercoaster.com/coasters/new00/
Click on the record book link and then click on steel coasters and scroll down to the section about the steepest. To complicate things, this site shows the Superman:ROS rides as having 78 degree angles of descent, which I think is definitely wrong. Anyone know for sure on this one? I know Alton Towers may say 90 degrees, but it may not be. I would like to know for sure.

It's true, the vertical drop coasters are just a hair off of 90 degrees. Not that it's going to FEEL any different!

Yes, Oblivion and G5 are both 87.5 degrees. Ultra Twister is 87 degrees.

Superman:TE, Tower of Terror, and Mr. Freeze are all 90 degrees, but in reverse freefall. The Chiller: Batman is the only coaster, currently in operation, with a 90 degree forward drop.

TSC: What part of the Chiller is 90 degrees? If you mean the "top-hat" inversion then the Mr. Freeze coasters have that too (in fact they were first)

maybe i was wrong then but alton towers boast that oblivion WAS the first vertical drop coaster in the world but it may not be any more, but i don't know about all these american coasters cos i've never been to america

Camel i just went on your link and if you click on the G5 link it says that oblivion was the 1st vertical drop coaster in the world and now G5 is the 2nd

When Alton Towers first released information regarding the ride I was all over it. The www.oblivion.com site is very cool. I wasn't denying that oblivion was the first vertical drop coaster, as it most definitely was the first of its kind. My point was that is isn't quite 90 degrees and I think we all are in agreement now. I only wish I could ride it (and Nemesis).

That's right, I completely forgot that Mr. Freeze has that too, I was only thinking of the Spike being 90 degrees.

We have lots of inverted B&Ms in the states, but Nemesis looks awesome. I would love to ride it sometime.

Nemesis rocks, scarey though flying at rocks and turnig away at the last second. It pulls a lot of g's i could barely walk when i came off it.
