ESPN writers look for football history on Cedar Point's beach

Posted Monday, August 19, 2002 8:51 AM | Contributed by Lynch

While working as lifeguards at Cedar Point nine decades ago, Knute Rockne and Gus Dorais forever changed the way football is played when they developed the forward pass on the beach.

Cedar Point fans know the sign exists, but it is unfortunate that it is not in a more prominent place. The sign belongs in front of the Hotel Breakers.

The last time I saw the sign, it was on the side of the Soak City bathhouse.

I agree with you Gemini. I barely knew the sign existed, I just happened to glance that way. A prominent sign should be placed there......"hit 'em hard....fight, fight, fight!"

Has anyone e-mailed Jim Caple about where it is yet?

" including the Millennium Force, the fastest and tallest coaster in the world. At 310 feet"

...what's taking everyone so long to bash this dude for calling MF the tallest coaster in the world?

He's a fellow football fan! No bashing from me, he's just miss informed. If there is no sign there then it definitely should be brought back. Such a significant part of football history should have a marker! This is another History plus for Cedar Point, you would think they would at least acknowledge it happening there.

No sense bashing someone who made a special trip to see a special marker and then couldn't find it. If he were smart, he should have contacted a higher up...afterall, he IS with the media.

I wasn't waiting for someone to bash him on the stat, I was waiting for someone to point out that they went to Cedar Point and only rode Mean Streak and Magnum ;)

Too bad he didn't happen to wander into Soak City as he surely would have seen it then. I'm glad Gemini e-mailed the author. I probably would have if he hadn't. :) Honestly, I don't really like the placement of the plaque. I think something along the lines of the one up at the front of the park by the carausel would look nice somewhere along the beach walkway and would probably garner a whole lot more attention than the current plaque.

Could somebody tell me why doing a "forward pass" was such an important event? Gee, let's throw the ball forward! Haven't people done this since the beginning of throwing?

What did the they do before this? Throw the ball straight up in the air and wonder why it didn't go anywhere?

I'm not a football fan, in fact, I don't even know how to play the game so excuse my ignorance. Thanks.

Cedar Point touts this football event in just about every promotional video or historical account I've seen. I'm surprised they have the sign so well hidden.

Before they perfected the forward pass, they would either shuffle pass it, or run it...duh. They perfected the technique of getting the ball to spiral long distances.

You don't know how to play football? Did you grow up in a cave? :)

"Did you grow up in a cave? "

Darn near. Dare I ask what a "shuffle pass" is?
