Aurora setting hurdles for Six Flags Worlds of Adventure

Posted Thursday, June 21, 2001 9:48 AM | Contributed by Jeff

Aurora isn't going to make expansion easy for Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. The city has said they will only transfer the old zoning certificate if they comply to certain conditions, including an end to a pending lawsuit.

It boils down to the taxes they are trying to get out of SFWoA they will hold this up until the tax issue is settled. Its just a chip in aurora favor.

That park doesn't care about taxes, as any such admission taxes would be passed to the guests.

Its funny how they bring up zoneing after they had asked for tax increase and SF said no, just looks a little fishy on my part that it happend after saying NO. If aurora had angreement with SWO to pay taxes(they want to keep that one) yet they also had an agreemnet with SWO since 1971 for zoneing now they want to change that. Aurora in my own opinion they are using this as a bargining chip for more money. Also if they dont care about taxes why not give into auroras demands.

I really hope this park can make it happen. I think Aurora should let the park get what ever zoning it needs so that it can get more top notch rides and turn into a resort. If it turns into a resort, then Arora could get a boost in tourism, and every city wants that right?

The "city"...or should I say "elected officials" want to get re-elected. They need campaign money and/or voter approval to do that. Campaign contributions usually come from local business. Since this park probably helps them, perhaps they are worried about pleasing the voters? You know...infrastructure issues...road improvements...etc.

Awe, why bother with SFWOA when you have the best amusement park in the world an hour away!

Get to the POINT!

Aurora's demands aren't about taxes, they're about ridiculous zoning that would prevent the park from ever building anything.

Sure, why doesn't Six Flags just pack it all up and go away. Yeah right, not going to happen.

I'm the guy who contributed the Whopper of the Week a couple of weeks ago on Thrillride! about my neighbor who knows about all the rides. This time he told me that what it is really boiling down to is Six Flags settles the tax debate to Aurora's liking and Aurora will give them a zoning permit to build the ride. As of now, angry Fairview Road residents have not factored into negotiations between the two parties. BTW, my neighbor STILL hasn't told me the manufacturer or exact details, just 250 feet high and 5000 feet long.

From the majority of comments I've read lately in the trip reports I think they need to take the year off and concentrate on the running of the park instead of adding another ride. And this is coming from a Six Flags season pass holder! (not SFWOA though). BTW, would you like to explain how you get from SFWOA to CP in an hour without excessive speeding? *** This post was edited by Intamin Fan on 6/21/2001. ***

Personally I think this park has the potential to be a top ten amusement/theme/thrill park and having a 200 foot coaster would be absolutely necessary for putting in a better position against Cedar Point, Kennywood, Kings Island, and Busch Gardens.
