Woman dies following ride on Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain (UPDATED)

I was just thinking that too. Goliath has been open for about a year and a half, and nothing like this has happened before (I assume). This really points to the woman having some previous health condition. Especially since some of the rides I've been on(i.e. Mindbender WEM) pull over 6 g's, and they have probably never had an incident like this. I know that ride has had a worse incident, but not due to the G's. However, this is a very sad story. I will be praying for her family.

My condolences go out to the family. Even though the article states that the girl boarded the ride healthy,in some cases a person can have something wrong with them and not even know it (like what Jeff stated about basketball players who suddenly collapse and die on the court, for example).

Though not related to the story but within the same topic, how many people really pay attention to the fun and safety signs at ride entrances? If someone with a medical condition wants to conquer the biggest and most intense coaster in the park, more than likely they'll get in line without looking at the safety signs.

G's wouldn't really affect a person's heart would they? I was under the impression that all you really do is black out in intense G's.

I just saw the CNN report on the incident and they were quick to note that the ride was apparantly not at fault and that it was being reopened. Hopefully with the media support, we won't have any certain congressman complaining about safety.

This really is not good. First the Boomerang incident with those two girls, then a Boomerang gets stuck, and now a woman is found dead on Goliath. I hope none of those idiots in Washington decide that coasters are unsafe like they tried doing a year or two ago. I do not think ath Curly Q would have killed her. A lot of people get the vision fading. Almost all my friends as well as myself get that on all of the stand-up coasters. That I do not think would do it, only an autopsy would tell.

The next fews days should be very interesting to say the least. We won't really know if Goliath's helix contributed in any way to her death until the autopsy is finished. If it turns out that it did, then we might just see a lawsuit. Not to mention the closing of Goliath and perhaps Titan. Even if it's only temprorary to install trims.

Yeah, i rode the Titan at SFOT last week. I really enjoyed. My friend also said he had a small blackout on the second helix and have heard a few others say that too. I dont think the actual helix itself would have killed her unless she did have something else wrong in which the G force at that point would have done something to her. Wait and see.

They will probably have to slow down Golaith, sadly. I'm sure it wasd a great coaster, but does Magic Mountain really want another accident? Of course, there may have been some condition that the woman had that help to clear the coaster's reputation. This really blows for Giovanola and the whole industry.

I heard it WAS Goliath's Helix that killed her and was a very possible point of the heart attack. I have been through Goliath's helix twice and grayed out breifly before. I heard the like was up and running about 4 hrs. later full force! Much too bad that a coaster that has been labedled the most intense out there has killed somewon, I'm glad I rode it with little brakes though, if SFMM gets sued the ride might even get the Colossus treatment if a Judge orders it, I hope not! :(

It's a shame she died but I personally don't think the ride caused her death. I rode Goliath(my new favorite coaster) 2 weeks ago when I was in la la land on business and the first time I thought I experienced tunnel vision in the helix, but on the second ride realized it was an illusion caused by the quickly passing supports and landscaping, but thought it was REALLY awesome.

Most likey she died on the second part of goilaths amazing helix were even the strongest man cant keep his hands all the way up. And unfortunately it will most likely get the Collosus treatment, may Goliath RIP.

I can't believe this happened so close to home on one of my favorite rides. This should not make people believe that rollercoasters are not safe though. Best wishes to her family and friends.

As it turns out, the woman did NOT die of a heart attack. Instead it was a "subarachnoid hemorrhage around the brain stem and a ruptured berry aneurysm of the cerebral artery".

I feel sorry for the family. I was just at sfmm today and nothing changed.

Well, I was actually right... Bleeding in the brain. What could have caused this?

Excessive G-Forces on the ride. And Goliath is notorious for the excessive g-forces in the helix.

Here come the reprofiling czars... I can do nothing but hope.
