Unions are conceptually a good idea, and without them we might not have had the changes in federal requirements for working people. That part of it is a good thing.
However, in many cases today, unions do more to hurt the companies than help them (and I am in no way saying this is one of those cases, since we don't know anything about the offer made by Cedar Point). A lot of folks in the auto industry blame the unions for making it harder to build a quality product that is competitive.
There are some cases where unions help and hurt, as with teachers. On one hand, you bet that they would be taken advantage of if they could. On the other hand, they can slight the kids (for example, teachers get dibs on coaching contracts, even if they're not most qualified for the job).
When it comes down to it, the market drives what we're willing to buy and how much we should pay for it. Unions sometimes put a kink in that chain.
