S&S Safety? Also, questions [Towers]

What are the safety things on S&S towers? What is there to stop the thing from falling to the ground halfway up the tower? And what are those little metal poles that come out of the ground? I think you hit them as you settle back to the ground.

yeah they're shock absorbers. and the only way it could fall back to earth is if all 4 cables snapped cause I think its designed so that even 1 cable could support the weight of the car. And there are probably some more safety devices that extend beyond my limited knowledge.

If something inside the air cylinders goes wrong, they autmatically leak out air slowly, so the car comes bac kto the ground at 3 m.p.h. or so. I've seen it myself. At SFNE, on Scream!, one of the towers' cars was waiting at the top for longer than usual. The computer recogzined this, and brought it back down slowly. Good to know, eh? As if those things weren't terrifying enough (but fun as hell).
