However, those are relatively slow phenomena. What I was talking about was the loss of water volume due to global warming. Warmer summers will cause more rapid evaporation off the lake surfaces. Warmer winters will result in less ice cover for shorter spans, allowing more evaporation even during the cold season. The upshot is that according to models released last year, Lake Erie is predicted to lose 16% of its area by 2050. If I remember correctly the other lakes were expected to lose some number approximate to that.
