adding "Rama" to a name

Why was it popular in the mid 1900's to affix "Rama" to a name? I recently read the post asking about the Atom Smasher (http://www.coasterbuzz.com/forum.aspx?mode=thread&TopicID=48230) and noted the use of "Rama" in the documentary mentioned by Mamoosh. Other popular uses were Ride-O-Rama and Spook-O-Rama. Anyone know the origins or reasons this was popular?

The suffix -rama means a "spectacular display." This is Cinerama was named after Cinerama, which was the 50s precursor to IMAX. For both the movie and rides, I think the simple explanation is that promoters were trying to create hoopla around their attractions, and -rama was the buzzword of the day to do so.

Scroll to the third question here.

EDIT: in case you were wondering where I found that link, I simply did a Yahoo search for "origin of the word panorama." It's amazing what you can find on the internet if you try a simple search! ;)

Or you could not be a pretentious ass and just give the poor kid the link and kindly point out that this kind of information is available through web searches...

I don't think Moosh was being pretentious at all. Part of the problem with questions asked is sometimes they don't get answered right away and people get upset (particularly newbies).

Maybe no one knows the answer because the question is kind of esoteric-- like in this situation? So what do you do? I would start looking through all the resources out there for the answers. There are multiple search engines, you've got Wikipedia etc. You could even call your local librarian who could help you out.

Love It! Thanks to PhantomTails for the explanation (and for making laugh for calling me a kid). Prententious or not, Mamoosh has my vote (not sure what for, I'll think of something). Thanks to Mamoosh for the informitive website that really answered my question beyond what I expected. Chuck??? no funny/annoying line referring to yourself in third person? Intamin Fan, nah, I just wanted to see what the masses had to say (ok, really just Mamoosh :) ), but thanks for the extra hints on how to find answers.

Some people use this board to try to have an interesting conversation. Sure they can find if from a seach, but sometimes its more fun to talk about it with others.

Thanks phantomtails for being nice enough to discuss it without being arrogant.

Or you could not be a pretentious ass...

I've tried to quit being pretentious ass. I've tried the patch, the gum, and going cold turkey but I always fail. Any suggestions would be appreciated ;)

That was my suggestion when Holiday World announced they were going to hold an annual event again, lol.

Sorry, Roller-Rama has been worn out for a long time now.

Gatorama however, Hum, Thats a idea!

Fads are so common in the way things are named that they quickly get outdated.

Space Rocket, Lunar whatever, Meteor, comet ect all are based on times they came about.

The Alien fad is pretty recurring tho.

Yes, but Banarama version is a cover. The original was by Dutch band Shocking Blue. It hit #1 in February 1970.
