Magnum Sinking
You know what is hilarious? just this saturday I was talking coasters with this guy who was semi-knowledgable and he looked me dead in the eye and told me that Magnum is sinking. I took all i had not to laugh in his face. Its unbelieveable, but that rumor is still ALIVE and WELL. lol

the same thing goes around at my middle school. All of these kids that know so much more than me about roller coasters (sarcastic). According to my school, Magnum has already been torn down during the winter because it is sinking into the sand. IT ISN'T EVEN ON SAND! that is what i think that the people think. Let me tell u some other funny stories about these kids at my school have told me. They said that people died on the Mind Eraser at SFWoA, which is not true, although it did get stuck at the cobra roll once i guess. I have a question myself to other people in this chatroom, kind of getting of the subject,if you are still in school, do kids think that they know more than you about roller coasters. It makes me so mad sometimes
I'm in high school and it happens all the time. It bothers me a little, but sometimes people are better off not knowing they are wrong. There's someone else in my grade though that knows just as much, if not more, about coasters as I do, that way I have an intelligent person to talk coasters with. :)

Yeah i thought this rumor was also long gone until an idiot at school had to say it again. I guess the people in my high school just dont know.

Yeah, I know what thats like ZEPPLINFAN, eggs, and SmArtAce. I have a friend that says when he went to Mertil Beach in mid March, it was 90 degrees outside, and a roller coaster there he went on was the best in the world, and was 500 feet tall, went 120 mph, and had a vertical loop 350 feet tall and started 30 feet below ground. Now, 90 degrees was the flag that said "he is a liar," and then it just got stupid. Now, where is "underground" when your on a pier? And 500 feet, 350 foot loop, 120 mph? Now that I think about it, I should have asked him how many Gs it had, and he'd probably say "100 times more than the sun!"
But, the truth is, Maggie is sinking! Think about it, anything that has weight will sink a little into the ground. Why do you think after a long time houses get cracks in the basement??? But, Maggie isn't sinking like that rumor says so.

the Mind Eraser did get stuck in Cobra Roll at SFWoA ... I SAW IT HAPPEN!!! i was walking up pass the front gate towards the entrance to the big dipper and looked over and saw the thing stopped and sorta rocking a little in the cobra roll.... later that afternoon it was running aagain so i didnt know how they got it down.

I agree with TrBiggar, I would assume that many coasters are sinking. Now when someone says something is "sinking" most people assume that its on a massive scale that you will be able to see. Think about plate techtonics, you can't feel the North American plate moving a extremely marginal amount every year, can you? But it is. So what if Magnum has sunk less than 1 mm over the last decade, nobody would notice, but it would confirm the rumor wouldn't it? They measuring devices used today are so precise that they can detect almost any movement at all. I wish there was someone on here that does that for a living to help everyone understand.
One other thing, someone mentioned that Magnum isn't built on the sand. Now correct me if I'm wrong but Cedar Point is on a peninsula, right? Does anyone here really know what the bedrock is underneath the park. It very well could be some unconsolidated material like sand or gravel. From a geologic standpoint that is what I would assume is underlying parts of the peninsula. Just because it looks like hard ground on the surface doesn't mean the same thing is true ten feet deep.

About Vampire getting stuck 2 many times, and then getting moved to SFNE, I'd like to note that as a Mass. resident, the recent "Flash Back" (used to be Vampire) still gets stuck a lot right before it goes into the 2nd chain lift, I should know, I saw it happen twice in 2 1/2 hrs. and my friends were on it once. I just walked by them and laughed at them cuz they couldn't do anything about it.
I don't think that the folks who perpetuated this rumor are necessarily idiots. It is completely plausible and has actually happened to other roller coasters. However, this is probably a rumor. I don't know how it started. But subsidence is a very real problem in some areas.
