How do they come up with these great ride names th
Local legend has it (and even by his own admission in the book "Hersheypark: The Sweetness of Success") that J.B.McKinney, the then top guy at Hershey, wanted to name the sooperdooperlooper the "Merry Derry Dipper" but his family overuled that name and came up with the s-d-looper! (good call by the wife and kids on that one!)
I'm also glad they used the alternate name for the constelation Ursae Majoris in naming their inverted coaster... The Great Bear sure sounds better than The Big Dipper.

Well, I think I've got the Six Flags method down:
"Pick a super-hero."
"How about Superman?"
"Ok. Now, you, over there, add somthing to that."
"The super ultimate extreme escape?"
"There you go. We're done with the name."
Just seems like that's how it works. Now all we have to do is sit back and see what "great names" the Sea World buyout produces for Six Flags Worlds of Adventure..."Shamu: The Ultimate Escape.

When they built the Vortex at PGA, they had a naming contest for all the employees...winner got to be on the first official run with the media etc.
Me, being the sharp enthusiast that I am, decided to submit all the names that I could think of that were not already in use at that time (Standing Ovation, Panther, Bobcat, etc).
I should have known that KECO would use the same name they used for their Arrow looper at King's Island. I thought I had it with Standing Ovation for sure. Needless to say, I was rather disappointed.
As far as naming, it's all about the Marketing Department. Also, there are some companies whose sole purpose in life is to create names for products. For example, the "Pentium" and "Celeron" chips were named by such a company.
