Can anyone name this defunct ride?

Does anyone know what the small flat ride is behind the Chance Radar? I don't think I've ever seen one of these before.

Is that ride the same as the one in the background of this photo? (or am I looking at that incorrectly?)

Nope. That's a spider.

It almost looks like a twister, sort of.

The ride behind the scrambler at Lakemont is an Eyerly Octopus.

I don't think that's an octopus. The octopus only has one car per arm. The ride in that picture has two.

I'm not sure that it's a spider, either, though.

It almost looks like a Tip Top, but I know it isn't. I'd suggest going to flatrides.com and emailing the link to Adam Sandy, the webmaster. I bet he'd know.

Its a Chance Turbo. They haven't been built since the 70's. Conneaut Lake Park got one in 1998, but couldn't get parts to set it up. I think it came from Old Indiana. they traded it to a ride broker in Allentown.

Don't quote me, but I believe they are 'outlawed' as in State Inspectors really wouldn't inspect it if one showed up at a fair in 12-14 states. The Turbo truly is a ride from the past, that was good, but too intense for the public, and therefore had a short life span.

About 3-4 still operating in North America.

Also, this is a Radar, not a Turbo. The question was what is the ride BEHIND the Radar. Seems like no one has been able to identify it so far.

I do not recognize the ride in the background of the first photo. The ride in the foreground is a Radar. The photo is the same one the Flat Store has for the Chance Radar. According to another web site the Chance Radar was introduced before the Chance Turbo. The ride in the second picture is an Eyerly 16 car Octupus. I think these were less common than the 8 car model. The Eyerly Spider came later and has curved sweeps rather than straight sweeps. It usually has six sweeps with two cars per sweep. The ride in the background of the first photo is NOT an Octopus. The tubs are all wrong. It also appears that all the tubs are at the same height, which NEVER happens on an Octopus. Also, I've never seen a 'Pus with that big of a center decoration.

As noted, the Coasterimage.com image shows a Scrambler and a 16-tub Octopus. The Octopus has two or three different styles of sweep, and the end of the arm has two different variations, one for the 8-tub version, one for the 16-tub version.

Also as noted, the Flat Joint photo is a Twister. But I don't think the first photo shows a Twister either.

Tom, I can only think of one Octopus that doesn't have 8 sweeps, and that would be the Spidopus at Enchanted Village: 6 sweeps, 12 tubs, but the sweeps are straight as on an Octopus, not curved as on a Spider. I think there are two 5-arm Monsters, though.

I think I may have the answer!

It is a Trabant that is in the process of either being assembled or disassembled. That might explain the odd positioning of the seats.

That's a very good observation. I guess that it is possible it could be a Trabant being assembled or disassembled.

But if you look closely, it looks as if each individual seat is attached to a post, my guess would be so that the seats could each spin freely as the ride rotates.

I am still at a loss. I'll have to scour all my old Carousel Magazines to see if I can find this. That magazine is a great source of old flat rides.

Thanks guys, it was the way the cars were attached that was throwing me off. A 16 tub Everly Octopus?

Lucky kids, it appears that this ride is in the apartment complex.

Actually that trabant is at Conneat Lake. The building in the background in Hotel Conneaut and the building to the right of the ride is the old fire station/Lakeland Museum/what is it now? No apartment complex but Conneaut is a weird sort of place with amusement rides located along streets and sometimes intermixed with houses.

Regarding Spiders and Octopi, why is it that the Octopus is anatomically correct but the spider is not with only 6 arms (I won't even ask about the "spidopus and other weird variations)?

The ride behind the Radar to me looks like a Twister combined with a Paratrooper. It appears to have a hydrolic arm underneith where it will pick up and tilt and the seats would spin. It looks like a Chance Product.

A modern version of this ride would be a "Touch Down"

Or so I think....

I am not sure if it is a Trabant being racked or unracked as I don't know if Chance ever put out Trabants with a center like that.

Yeah, forget the Trabant (they seem to be everwhere). What about that Radar.

1) What exactly does (did) it do? Are riders locked into the little chairs / seats / or what ever they are on the ends of the arms and do they spin or what?

2) I bet load times were horrible.
