New info on phantoms revenge!

from a local news station (WTAE) ive heard that the phantoms revenge will travel at 86 miles per hour. At 230 ft, how can this ride be faster then goliath(or atleast i think faster than goliath. all shows clock it at 85 mph)

Perhaps because it starts the 230 ft hill at a faster speed. Goliaths largest hill is its lift hill, therefore it crests the top at low speed. phantoms largest hill is the second hill in the ride, therefore it crests this hill at higher speed.

I don't know the stats on Goliath, but the descent on PR is to be 5-10 feet longer than that of the Steel Phantom, also the turn at the bottom is not sharp anymore, leaving less resistance. This should allow for a faster ride which maintains speed throughout more of the ride.

Jdancisin is correct on a point, also. PR is going aprox. 15MPH at the crest of the 2nd (longest) hill. Off of lift chain, you're lucky to crest at 5MPH. Another 10MPH there.

Also, the rolling stock is completely different, which has a lot to do with speed.

Actually, they are going to use the original Phantom trains and put new harness-free Morgan-styled bodies on them. Same running gear, different body.

Kennywood is keeping the FRAMES of the old Arrow SP cars. Same wheels, and metal structure. The actual look (and, of course, aerodynamics) of the trains will be different because the fiberglass bodies on the trains will be entirely new. When it was decided to retro fit the old Arrow bodies without OTSR's, it became apparent that this was the best way to go. (KP is very concerned that the "average joe" won't see this as the same old Phantom. Hence the color change for the track, and yes, a body and color change for the rolling stock.)

What is up with the double-up??? Still haven't seen any pics on it. Have they built it or is the idea just canned??

THe double-up is out. I was looking forward to it, but the idea of cruising along the flat in the newly designed, open-air (hopefully) cars is appealing too...

HEY, does any one know how many coaches the trains wil have, and how many benches?
That could be a major factor with speed as well!

When is the ride even slated to open?

I don't know how many cars each train will have. I'd guess they'll still be 4-seat cars, since the chassis aren't changing.

No official date has been set, but the Kennywood site says "May 2001." That is, of course, if everything goes flawlessly from here on in.
