Outraged at SFWoA name?
I agree with the thought that it should be called Six Flags Geauga Lake, so it can keep the original name. What turned my stomach about the park name becoming Six Flags Ohio last year was the park selling merchandise that said...

Well the name Six Flags has only been around since 1961, I know they are talking about the park in general being around that long, but it just made me mad that they are stealing Geauga Lake's history and using it for their own.

Anyway... Yeah, people around here (and "here" is a good three hours away from Six Flags Geauga Lake Ohio Worlds Of Adventure) are pretty familiar with the place. I'm not sure if SF did enough to bang home that Six Flags Ohio actually is Geauga Lake, though. Even with all the commercials, my Dad still didn't realize SFO was GL until I told him... after I got back!
(Note: Jeff, you'd get a kick out of what he said after I mentioned Geauga Lake. "Eh, that park, it, ah, wasn't that nice when we went. How is it now?" Well...)
I'm waiting for the commercials this year, though. "Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, formerly Six Flags Ohio, formerly Geauga Lake is back for another thrilling season!" Oy.

First I would like to say that SFWoA stole the name from Michigan's Adventure. Universal Studio's IOA also stole their name from Michigan's Adventure.
Second, SFWoA name should be Chris Drake's World O'Rama.
Third, anyone who is truly outraged by the name of SFWoA really needs to take a couple of aspirin (or Tylenol) and get some sleep.

I don't think Six Flags was thinking about Worlds of Fun when they though up Worlds of Adventure. I think that's very odd for everyone to think that since WoF isn't even close to one of the nation's top ticket-selling parks or even the top park in it's state. I can see that IOA was possibly partly there(maybe not) but definitely not Worlds of Fun. WoF sounds like a name to a park that should be defunct. The Fun park just sounds so kiddie carnivalish. This is nothing against the physical park. Just my thoughts on the name. No one stole the name. Six Flags stole the name of WoA like Paramount stole the GAm name from Six Flags. Dah!
I like the SFWoA name because it sounds more like it doesn't belong to just a certain state. It is much more appealing to me than Six Flags St. Louis or Six Flags Over Georgia. SFGam and PGA both started out as Great America. They were owned by Marriots and Paramount bought the one in California and Six Flags bought the one in Illinois.

Well, as a Geauga Lake guru as I am, and with all of you coasterbuzzers wondering when I would log in and give you my opinion, since I am so great, let me tell you what I think....
When the Six Flags conversion was happening last year, the park went to the schools and did a survey. Yes, SFO was the winner. But they still couldn't decide. "Geauga Lake" was hard to pronounce, many didn't know where it was, and after much consideration, they decided to change the name to SFO. It wasent a one-step decision.
No, I don't like it, really but its making "Six Flags" more powerful as a brand name, which the company wants.
I really don't care for the new name this year for the obvious reasons. Perhaps it should have been more thought out.
like: "Wonder World" or something along those lines.

You have to look at it this way.....it won't be a name that Six Flags can clone somewhere else. I consider that being original!

I'm split on this one, although I always sort of thought of GL as a 2nd rate park (besides Big Dipper, I mean) and I can see how 6F would want to distance themselves from that, I think it still deserves to be acknowledged that GL is what the park is based on, where its history lies.
Just because GL wasn't that great doesn't mean that it doesn't deserve to keep the name. I think if it was SFGL people would still have known that there were major changes within, and still had a 42% increase since people would go for 4 new coasters even if it was called "Six Flags Pile of Sh*&."
When I go on vacation, I don't go far away and say "ooh, let's go to the McDonald's here and see how their Big Macs are." I think homogenizing all their parks helps the local markets somewhat (more rides with less development time) but kills the parks as far as making them destinations. "Oh, you have Six Flags here, too, huh?"
If you don't care about this name change, think about the outcry if it were "Six Flags Lake Erie" instead of CP, "Six Flags over Pittsburgh" instead of Kennywood, "Six Flags America" instead of, er, sorry about that last one.

The Great America thing was a joke goon.
Anyway, I know where SF got the name. They got it from themselves as a hybrid between their other two animal park names:SFMW and SFGAdv.
And I've never heard anyone call PKI, Paramount. It's always Kings Island. I usually say all the SF parks without the SF too so that doesn't matter. I don't think I'll call SFWoA by it's name though. I'll still call it SFO.

To be perfectly honest, I had always thought it was pronounced "Gouge-a" like in "gouge your eye out" or something. This coming from somebody who has never stepped foot in Ohio. ;) I guess I'll have to adjust to "Jee-ogga" :)

Is it just me or does Hypersonic look like one of those coasters you would see on Looney Toons?
Much of my family and other adults also refer to SFGAm as Mariott's. Gee, after the ten or twenty years, I think it's time they read the sign next time they drive by! As for myself, I used to call it Great America, but now I've found myself calling it Six Flags. It just comes out easier I guess...
